The complex is being implemented following strict licensing and environmental and social monitoring processes. It has secured land areas in regions without resettlement, low environmental impacts, and no impacts on species included in the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
Statkraft will also carry out Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in nearby communities, focusing on improvements in the education and infrastructure sectors.

Every time a river flows into the sea, an amount of energy equivalent to a 120-meter waterfall is silently wasted, but Japan has just inaugurated the world’s first power plant that captures this waste and transforms it into electricity 24 hours a day without sun, wind, or fuel.

The Morro do Cruzeiro is a greenfield wind complex located near Statkraft’s existing wind energy assets in Bahia. The plants will consist of two wind projects, with 14 turbines and an installed capacity of 79.8 MW. Given the excellent wind conditions in the region, the complex will generate 386 GWh of renewable energy per year, enough to supply over 190 thousand homes.
Construction Work for the Plants Begins in June This Year and Many Job Opportunities May Be Generated in Bahia
Construction begins in June 2022, with completion expected in early 2024. The estimate is that the first wind turbines will begin operating in October 2023. The complex will use the Nordex 163/5.7 MW wind turbines, the largest used by Statkraft to date. With a diameter of 163 meters, the rotors will cover an area equivalent to about three soccer fields.
The generation of renewable energy from the wind farms will allow Statkraft to meet the commitments from last year’s public auction. The remaining energy will be sold in the free market.
“Statkraft’s ambition in Brazil is to be a major developer and operator of hydropower, wind, and solar energy, contributing to a greener and more sustainable planet. The Morro do Cruzeiro project brings us closer to that goal,” says the president of Statkraft in Brazil, Fernando de Lapuerta.
The completion of the two wind projects Morro do Cruzeiro and Ventos de Santa Eugênia, currently under construction in Bahia, will more than double the installed capacity to 1050 MW.
The construction of Morro do Cruzeiro is part of the growth strategy in Brazil and contributes to achieving the goal of developing 6 GW of wind energy globally by 2025.
