In the current scenario of energy transformation, mining is adopting new practices focused on efficiency and sustainability. Since 2023, investment in renewable energy solutions has grown exponentially. Smarter and more environmentally friendly energy systems are being implemented, optimizing energy consumption to significantly reduce environmental impact. Initiatives like these are essential to achieving global emission reduction and responsible consumption.
The partnership between various companies and local communities highlights the joint effort for better energy management. Since January 2023, this collaboration has been pivotal in creating energy innovation corridors that seek to challenge old paradigms. Thus, the mining sector not only implements new technologies but also redefines the role of innovation in the sustainable development of extractive activities.
Innovative Solutions: Towards a Sustainable Future
Within the extractive industry, the pursuit of energy consumption reduction has become a central theme since March 2024. Pilot projects have tested the use of solar energy and other renewable sources, revealing promising results. For example, a mine in Chile managed to cut its energy consumption in half by adopting solar panels and sophisticated storage technologies. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also lowers operational costs, serving as a great example of how the sector can benefit from energy solutions.

The Amazonian Federation of Sustainability and multinationals such as Schneider Electric have been at the forefront of collaborating on innovative solutions since February 2023. Together, these organizations have been pioneers in implementing projects that facilitate access to clean energy, specifically in critical and remote areas. This type of partnership not only promotes local development but also symbolizes the global commitment to energy transformation.

Energy Transition in the Amazon
From now until September 2025, an important transformation in energy access will be promoted, extending sustainable energy to the corners of the Amazon region. The highlight of the initiative, centered on ‘Sustainable Energy Solutions Hub for the Amazon’, will include the indigenous communities of Três Unidos and the riverine community of Tiririca in Amazonas, developing over ten years at the Innovation and Education Center for Sustainable Development (Nieds) Assy Manana.
The project is led by the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS) in collaboration with Schneider Electric, recognized worldwide for its role in digital transformation and energy management. This significant partnership was formalized at the G20 House in Rio de Janeiro and aims to expand energy solutions and efficiency in energy management, integrating new sustainable technologies.
Energy Solutions and Sustainability
The main focus lies in encouraging conscious and fair consumption, reducing waste and optimizing the use of energy within the energy system of the target regions. There is also a pursuit of innovative alternatives, aiming for a balance between local economic development, biodiversity conservation, and the reduction of harmful emissions.
‘Clean solutions are catalysts for new economic and educational opportunities’, highlighted Virgílio Viana, general superintendent of FAS, emphasizing energy as a key component for the sustainable development of the Amazon. ‘Energy paves the way for transformations that foster economic and social flourishing in the Amazon while preserving the integrity of the forest.’
Smart Management of Energy Consumption
According to Rafael Segrera, president of Schneider Electric in South America, ‘it is essential that energy solutions be accessible and sustainable, ensuring that communities with low access rates have the opportunity to manage their energy consumption more efficiently and integrated into their daily lives’.
The collaboration between Schneider Electric and FAS, dating back to 2012, is now expanding to include a broader spectrum of solutions geared towards conscious energy use, offering innovative and efficient alternatives for the Amazon region, thus promoting improvements in energy management.
Educational Focus on the Sustainable Hub
The Sustainable Energy Solutions Hub will highlight education by offering training and professional preparation that will instruct residents on the implementation and maintenance of smart energy systems. This movement aims to equip communities not only with technical knowledge but also empower them to practice energy autonomy.
Activities will be carried out to promote responsible energy use and facilitate the exchange of experiences, stimulating continuous learning that reinforces the conception that ‘energy is a universal right and its proper use is essential’, emphasizes Segrera. Schneider Electric is determined to empower one million individuals in energy management by 2025, and the inclusion of the Amazon in this plan is a priority.
Positive Socio-Environmental Impact
Among the ambitious goals of the Hub are the reduction of deforestation and the strengthening of Brazil’s presence at global events such as COP30, in line with the 2030 Agenda. Activities will be guided by relevant themes such as educommunication, access to culture, biodiversity conservation, and addressing climate change, benefiting 28 communities in the APA Rio Negro and RDS Puranga Conquista, reaching over a thousand families.
‘For the good of the Amazon, energy, water, and communication are fundamental pillars that stabilize local development’, states Valcléia Lima Solidade, highlighting the importance of the connection between intelligent energy alternatives and the social well-being of local communities.
Partnerships for a Living Amazon
The collaboration between FAS and Schneider Electric is reinforced by the Alliance of French Companies for a Living Amazon, solidified in March 2024, together with the France-Brazil Chamber of Commerce. This strategic alliance facilitates the entry of French companies into a network of projects aimed at sustainable development in the Amazon region, ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for the forest and its communities.
