A 42 kilometers from Vitória, via BR-262, two granite-gneiss massifs of 1,822 and 1,909 meters rise above the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo. The main set is the Pedra Azul, a key point of the Pedra Azul State Park, in Domingos Martins. It changes color 36 times in a single day.

The lichens covering the rock react to sunlight and humidity, and the spectrum ranges from the deep blue of dawn to the golden of dusk, passing through the moss green of the afternoon. The park records about 36 color variations in a single day, according to Em Foco from Estado de Minas and the Wikipedia of Pedra Azul State Park.

515 million years in the same place

It is estimated that the monoliths in the region formed about 515 million years ago, during the final phase of the structuring of a mountain range similar to the Himalayas. It’s no exaggeration: the rock is approximately seven times older than the era of the dinosaurs. The composition is granite and gneiss, and the main peaks of the park are Pedra Azul (1,822 meters), Pedra das Flores (1,909 meters, the highest point), Pedra do Tamanco (1,850 meters), and Pedra do Lagarto.

The accepted explanation for the color change lies in the lichens covering the rock’s surface. They react to sunlight and humidity throughout the day, and the spectrum ranges from the deep blue of dawn to the golden of dusk, passing through the moss green of the afternoon. The park’s Wikipedia notes that the tone “can vary between blue, green, and even yellow,” and the number of variations per day has been estimated at 36. I imagine what this does to those who camp to see the entire cycle at once.

For the size of the phenomenon, the protected area is compact: 1,240 hectares, created as a forest reserve in 1960 and elevated to a state park on January 3, 1991. In a single visit, you can cover the main formations from the official viewpoints.

1847: 39 families from Hunsrück ascended the Jucu River

The human layer of the place is as ancient as it is worth looking at. On January 27, 1847, 39 German families from the Hunsrück region, in the southwest of present-day Germany, ascended the banks of the Jucu River and founded the Colônia de Santa Isabel. It was the first German colony in Espírito Santo.

The municipality of Domingos Martins, today with about 35 thousand inhabitants, inherited the half-timbered architecture preserved in the historic center and the Evangelical Church of Lutheran Confession from 1866, one of the oldest standing in the state. The mountainous region of Espírito Santo still hosts events like the Winter Festival, the Strawberry Festival, and the Blummenfest. I confess that the combination of typical European architecture with a temperate climate (the annual average is 18.6 °C) seems like something from another continent, not just an hour from the capital of ES.

BR-262, km 89: how to get there and when to go

The entrance to the Pedra Azul State Park is located at km 89/90 of BR-262, in the district of Aracê, approximately an hour from Vitória. The area covers 1,240 hectares and offers three official programs: the Natural Pools Trail (about 3 hours round trip), the Lagarto Trail (about 1 hour), and the Climb to Pedra Azul, limited to 21 people per day in a short window between 6 am and 8 am.

Winter (June to August) is considered the golden season for the destination, with temperatures between 7 °C and 24 °C. For those who enjoy exploring Brazilian mountains with history, the region connects with another recently reported mountain route, the SC-370 of Corvo Branco in Santa Catarina, which links Urubici to Grão Pará through nearly 90-meter walls and flash fog. The formation of Espírito Santo dates back to the time when the Himalayas were rising, where more recently Indian engineers drilled 14 kilometers of rock to reduce a 4-hour journey to 15 minutes.

We often associate monoliths with Wyoming, Patagonia, or the ends of the world, but the Serra Capixaba holds one of the most expressive in the country just an hour from Vitória. It is 515 million years of geological history under 178 years of German immigration, all covered by a rock that changes color throughout the day.
