PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) and Inpex Come Together to Conduct a Study on the Potential for Carbon Capture and Storage.
The Thai oil and gas company, PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP), has partnered with Japan’s Inpex to conduct a study on the potential for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the Gulf of Thailand.
The study is expected to lay the groundwork for the potential development of a CCS center in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). Investment in CCS is an important measure for reducing carbon emissions and meeting international environmental commitments.
PTTEP and Inpex will share their knowledge and experience in CCS within the framework of international collaboration between the Thai Department of Mineral Fuels (DMF) and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC). This type of cooperation is essential to advance carbon capture and storage technologies.

China inaugurates a new era by signing a $5.1 billion project to expand one of the largest gas fields on the planet, adding 10 billion m³ per year and reinforcing an energy mechanism that already moves 30 billion m³ annually towards its market.
The Potential for Carbon Capture and Storage in Thailand
We have unique knowledge of the subsurface of the Gulf of Thailand and experience in the CCS initiative at the Arthit gas field. Combined with Inpex’s international experience in implementing CCS projects, we believe that the outcome of the study will equip Thailand with the necessary knowledge and information to outline the infrastructure and development plan for CCS, especially the central CCS initiative for the EEC, as CCS is one of the promising pathways that could substantially reduce carbon emissions from the industry and keep the country’s greenhouse gas net-zero targets within reach,’ said Montri Rawanchaikul, CEO of PTTEP.
Advances in the CCS Feasibility Study in Thailand
Meanwhile, PTTEP is leading the CCS feasibility study in Eastern Thailand of the PTT Group, a central initiative in the EEC aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from the group’s operational facilities in Rayong and Chonburi provinces, as well as nearby industrial areas, utilizing CCS technology and the storage potential in the Gulf of Thailand.
Implementation and Operation of the CCS Project
PTTEP is also progressing with the first CCS project in Thailand, in the Arthit gas field in the Gulf of Thailand. With the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase now completed, PTTEP expects to begin CCS operations at the Arthit field in 2027 to reduce 700,000 to 1,000,000 tons of CO2 per year from gas production.
Geological Advances and Greenhouse Gas Emission Targets
The outcome of the CCS study in the EEC, at the Arthit field and the CCS exploration project in the Gulf of North Thailand, will deepen geological knowledge about storage capacity and help Thailand achieve its goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.
