Indian Enters Guinness by Gathering 1,638 Active Credit Cards, World Record Highlighting Financial Discipline and Extreme Organization.

The Indian Manish Dhameja, born in New Delhi, made history by being officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the holder of the largest collection of valid credit cards in the world. According to the record published by the institution, the record was validated on April 30, 2021, counting exactly 1,638 active credit cards, all issued by different banks and financial institutions over more than two decades.

The story gained attention again in 2024 and 2025 after reports in outlets like NDTV and Gulf News, detailing Manish’s routine, the level of organization required to keep hundreds of cards operational, and how an unusual hobby turned into a globally recognized financial feat.

How the Collection Started: Curiosity, Benefits, and the Culture of Loyalty Programs

The record holder told Indian media that his collection started modestly in the early 2000s when credit card reward programs became popular in India. He noticed that different banks offered distinct advantages, such as:

  • airlines miles;
  • discounts at specific stores;
  • aggressive cashback;
  • customized points programs;
  • travel and insurance benefits.

His curiosity about these variations prompted Manish to request new cards, and what initially seemed like just financial interest turned into an organized collection studied and expanded with discipline.

Over 20 years, he came to understand the workings of the Indian banking systems deeply, balancing limits, due dates, fees, renewals, and points without losing control.

How Is It Possible to Maintain 1,638 Active Cards at the Same Time

The Guinness team highlighted that Manish’s difference is not just owning the cards — but keeping them valid, meaning with available limits, paid bills, and active status at the issuing bank.

To achieve this, the collector developed an extremely rigorous method:

  • spreadsheets with closing dates and due dates for each card;
  • minimum rotational usage to avoid automatic cancellations;
  • automated bill payments;
  • categorization by brand, type, and issuing bank;
  • physical separation of the cards in special cases.

Manish stated that he does not use most of the cards in daily life — but makes small transactions regularly, such as low-value purchases, just to keep the financial products active.

How Much Money in Limits Does This Represent? Banks Comment

Although banks do not disclose individual limit information, estimates by analysts interviewed by NDTV and Gulf News suggest that Manish might have access, summing all cards, to a total limit exceeding dozens of millions of Indian rupees, equivalent to:

  • over US$ 150,000
    or
  • over R$ 750,000
    in available credit, depending on the exchange rate.

This accumulated amount, however, does not mean that the collector utilizes such values — most exists only as theoretical limits, distributed among the various issuers.

Manish Is Not Delinquent and Has Never Missed a Bill

Reports indicate that Manish has never missed a bill payment. This impeccable record allowed him to:

  • become a premium customer at various banks;
  • receive invitations for high-category cards;
  • maintain good relationships with financial institutions;
  • ensure the automatic renewal of several cards over the years.

For experts, the case demonstrates that it is possible to manage multiple cards without falling into debt — as long as there is extreme discipline.

Why Do Banks Continue Offering Cards to Someone with Over 1,600 Cards?

According to Guinness and international media, the answer is simple:

each card is an individual product.

If the customer:

  • has verified income;
  • maintains a high score;
  • does not miss payments;
  • uses the card periodically;

then there is no technical impediment to opening new contracts.

Moreover, many Indian banks use aggressive promotions for acquiring customers, facilitating the entry of new cardholders, especially in urban areas.

The Global Impact and Curiosity About the Record Holder’s Lifestyle

After the Guinness certification, Manish became a prominent figure in reports in India, the Middle East, and on various social media platforms. The main reason for public fascination is:

  • how someone manages to handle hundreds of cards without losing track of dates and fees;
  • what motivates someone to turn financial instruments into collectible items;
  • what is the (theoretical) limit of cards that a bank or country would allow an individual.

Experts interviewed by Gulf News stated that, while unusual, the case does not pose a risk to the banking system precisely because Manish maintains absolute control over all contracts and has no history of delinquency.

A Record Difficult to Surpass

The Guinness World Records classified the achievement as one of the most complex in the financial category because it requires:

  • individual verification of each card;
  • validity checks;
  • evaluation of issuing institutions;
  • cross-referencing issuance dates and active status.

Furthermore, the Guinness team conducted an on-site audit to confirm that the cards were real, functional, and belonged to the same owner.

With the expansion of digital payment methods, analysts believe it is unlikely that another person will surpass this number in the coming years, especially as many banks are reducing the issuance of physical cards and migrating to digital wallets.

A Record Combining Financial Discipline, Patience, and Extreme Organization

Manish Dhameja’s collection of 1,638 valid credit cards is not just a curious record; it is a demonstration of organization, discipline, and deep knowledge of the financial system.

In an era where consumers face high-interest rates, indebtedness, and financial control challenges, the case shows that responsible credit use depends less on the quantity of cards and more on the ability to manage them.
