Garage renovation created an apartment for widowed mother, reduced the burden of two rented houses, brought mother and daughter closer and preserved autonomy and privacy.
Stacy Lince and her widowed mother, Lee Riech, were tired of paying for two rented houses in Santa Barbara, California. Their expenses reached £3,000 per month (equivalent to 20 thousand in reais, but considering a high cost of living in relation to the foreign city), an amount that led mother and daughter to buy a house with a separate garage.
In a report published on May 23, 2024, The Sun, a British newspaper that publishes news, behavior, and real stories, showed that the garage underwent 9 months of renovation until it became Lee’s new home.
Stacy stayed in the main house with her husband and children. Lee got a mother-in-law apartment on the same property, close to the family, but with its own entrance, routine, and independence.

Two rented houses consumed £3,000 per month and tightened the budget
Maintaining two rented homes weighed on the family budget. Stacy and Lee were spending about £3,000 per month on rent before gathering money to buy a residence.
The chosen house had an independent garage. The space allowed mother and daughter to live nearby without having to share the same rooms every day.

For Lee, the move also meant leaving a larger residence where she lived with her husband before becoming a widow. The garage was less than one-fifth the size of the old house, requiring a reduction in belongings.
35 square meter garage turned into an apartment in 9 months
Before the renovation, the one-car garage was full of stored items. The space was 35 square meters and now includes a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen.
The Sun, a British newspaper that publishes news, behavior, and real stories, reported that a sliding door separated the bedroom and bathroom from the living room and kitchen. The division helped create distinct spaces in a small area.
The renovation took 9 months to be completed. The garage stopped being just a storage space and became a living area with space to sleep, bathe, cook, and host family.
Apartment for mother gained fixed furniture and space for routine
Lee had to donate many items before the move, including a large bed. The adaptation was necessary for the compact apartment to function daily.
A table and a shelf were placed on the walls. The fixed furniture helped make better use of every corner and left the circulation area more open.
The living space does not have a dishwasher or a washing machine. Lee washes what she uses and uses her daughter’s machine when needed, showing that the space brought comfort but also some limits.
Mother and daughter started living close without giving up privacy
Stacy lives in the main house, while Lee lives in the garage transformed into an apartment. The short distance helps keep the family close and facilitates support between the two.
Even on the same property, mother and daughter treat each other as neighbors. They do not enter each other’s homes without exchanging messages first, a precaution that protects each one’s privacy.
The solution did not force Lee to give up living alone. She now has her own bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and schedule, but is closer to her daughter and grandchildren.
Garage renovation as a living space needs attention before starting
The transformation took place in Santa Barbara, United States. Therefore, it does not serve as a ready model for a project in Brazil, where each family needs to evaluate the rules and conditions of the location.
A garage transformed into an apartment requires planning of space, circulation, and installations that allow daily use. Kitchen, bathroom, and access to house services need to function safely.
Before starting a similar adaptation, it is worth checking the municipality’s procedures and understanding if the existing structure can accommodate a living space. The garage may be small, but residential use requires care from the beginning.
Stacy and Lee’s decision exchanged the burden of two rented houses for a shared property, with an independent dwelling for the mother. In 9 months, a garage used for storing objects took on a new function.
The renovation brought mother and daughter closer without turning coexistence into an obligation. Each maintained her space, while the family found a way to reduce expenses and live closer.
