BRF Signed Contract With Pontoon for Construction of a Solar Energy Self-Generation Park in Mauriti and Milagres, Ceará State

The food company BRF recently announced that it has signed a contract with the company Portoon for the construction of a solar energy self-generation park in the cities of Mauriti and Milagres, in Ceará, with an installed capacity of 320 Megawatt peak (MWp). BRF announced an investment to purchase renewable energy for 15 years, and the amount applied is R$ 50 million. Use of Energy Through Renewable Sources

BRF signed the Private Grant Instrument for Option to Purchase Shares, which pertains to the company’s entry into the project. The complex will feature 320 MWp of capacity and a total investment of R$ 1.1 billion. BRF will obtain 88% of its electricity from renewable and clean sources with this new venture.

Carlos Alberto Bezerra de Moura, Chief Financial Officer and Investor Relations Officer of BRF, stated in a statement that he believes this investment in solar energy is part of the company’s sustainability goals. “This move solidifies another important step toward Vision 2030, and the commitment to become Net Zero in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040, both in its operations and across its supply chain.”

BRF’s Solar Energy Project

According to the company, the estimated investment in the project is approximately R$ 1.1 billion (R$ 3.7 million/MWp installed), and BRF will directly invest about R$ 50 million. The park is expected to begin operations in 2024. On 1,170 hectares, 600,000 solar panels will be installed, allowing the generated energy to be distributed to BRF’s units in the Southern region of the country.

The initiative to construct a new solar energy park complements BRF’s joint venture announced last month with AES Brasil for the self-production of wind energy at the Cajuína Wind Complex (RN), along with other ongoing projects involving integrated producers. “This is expected to bring an estimated gain of R$ 1.7 billion over the next 15 years,” estimated BRF’s President, Lorival Luz, during a videoconference with journalists, considering that it will reduce energy procurement in both free and captive markets.

In the state of Santa Catarina, producers cooperating with BRF, one of the largest food companies in the world, signed the first contracts of the company’s agreement with Banco do Brasil to finance the installation of solar energy systems in the farms. The agreement established between BRF and BB stipulates that within BRF’s sustainability plan, a total of R$ 200 million will be allocated to producers seeking energy efficiency.

The agreement is part of BRF’s long-term strategy and is one of the initiatives in the plan, allowing the company to continue its commitment to sustainable development across the board and permeate all businesses. The company has set its own target to increase capacity for clean or renewable energy self-production by 50% over the next 10 years.

Recently, BRF had announced the “Vision 2030” plan, announced last December, which aims to increase the capacity for self-production of electricity from clean or renewable sources by 50% over the next 10 years. To this end, the company had already signed an agreement with Banco do Brasil, which will provide a credit line to finance investments in the installation of solar energy panels in farms in Santa Catarina and Paraná.
