Brazil Has Some Economic Sectors That Continue to Generate Many Job Openings Even Amid the Crisis and the Pandemic
The pandemic caught the world by surprise, causing the global GDP to shrink by 4.2% in 2020. Brazil saw its GDP decline by 4.1% last year. This situation made job openings extremely rare, increasing unemployment across the country. However, some economic sectors, such as construction, e-commerce, IT, and hospital health, continued hiring even during the pandemic.
Job Openings in IT and E-Commerce
UOL published a lengthy article showcasing some economic sectors. One example is entrepreneur Ricardo Zanlorenzi, who saw his company in the IT sector finish the year 2020 on a high note and start 2021 with 17 filled job openings. Nexcore, in the technology field, is projected to grow around 35% in 2021.

“The IT sector experienced a 20% increase in hiring in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period the previous year,” highlighted José Tortato, business manager at the National Employment Bank. In this sector, the most sought-after job openings were for IT technician, systems analyst, and developers.

The next few hours will be marked by increasing tension regarding the stance to be adopted by the Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (Copom/BC) concerning the benchmark interest rate (Selic) at the end of this Wednesday’s (17th) meeting. Although the market is ‘divided’ on the committee’s decision, the stronger trend in recent weeks is that the rate will remain unchanged at the current level of 14.50% per year. Meanwhile, a minority faction still ‘bets’ on a 0.25 percentage point (p.p) decrease.

Amazon plans to invest more than R$ 1 billion to transform the Brazilian airport into a major cargo hub; the agreement with the city hall is expected to be signed by 2026 and could generate around 5,000 jobs.
With a 75% increase in e-commerce in 2020, some other sectors also saw an uptick. One example is the logistics sector, which experienced increased job openings for drivers, stock clerks, delivery people, etc.
More Job Openings in Construction
With more people working from home, the construction sector was positively impacted: “Many people discovered that their home was not quite ready for home office, and sought to renovate their indoor spaces,” noted Tortato. Thus, job openings for masons, helpers, inspectors, and safety technicians also remained high.
Job Openings in Hospital Health
Another sector that has had and still has many job openings is hospital health. Unfortunately, the pandemic necessitated the construction of hospitals and the hiring of thousands of new professionals to work on the front lines of the pandemic. Evidence of this is a 17% increase in hiring in 2021 compared to the same period last year.
