Volkswagen announced a recall of 117,798 Polo, Virtus, Nivus, T-Cross, and Tera vehicles due to a software failure in the dashboard that may stop working after starting, with free service at dealerships starting May 11, and chassis consultation on the official automaker’s portal.

Volkswagen do Brasil recalled 117,798 vehicles for the largest recall of early 2026 in the country. The automaker identified a software failure in the combined instrument cluster of Polo, Virtus, Nivus, T-Cross, and Tera models manufactured between October 23, 2020, and October 14, 2025, a defect that can cause the digital dashboard to exhibit unexpected behavior shortly after engine startup and stop displaying essential information such as speed, fuel level, engine temperature, and warning lights. Volkswagen classified the defect as non-compliant with Brazilian legislation and warned that the failure increases the risk of accidents with possible physical harm to occupants and third parties.

Free service at Volkswagen dealerships begins on May 11, 2026. Owners of the five models involved in the recall will receive official letters from Volkswagen with specific instructions, but those who do not wish to wait for the correspondence can immediately check if their vehicle is on the list by accessing the automaker’s recall portal and entering the chassis number, information found in the vehicle’s document (CRLV) or on the windshield pillar on the driver’s side. The repair consists of a software update, a generally quick service that does not require parts replacement and is entirely free by legal determination, even if the vehicle is outside Volkswagen’s warranty period.

Which Volkswagen models are in the recall and what is the manufacturing period

Volkswagen recalls 117,798 Polo, Virtus, Nivus, T-Cross, and Tera for dashboard software failure. Repair is free from May 11.

The five models recalled by Volkswagen represent a significant portion of the brand’s fleet in Brazil. The Polo, a hatchback that was among the best-selling cars in the country in 2024 and 2025, leads the list alongside the Virtus (the line’s compact sedan), the Nivus (a coupe SUV launched in 2020 and manufactured in São Paulo), the T-Cross (Volkswagen’s best-selling compact SUV), and the Tera (the brand’s most recent launch). The affected manufacturing period runs from October 23, 2020, to October 14, 2025, a five-year interval that covers multiple generations and versions of each model.

Not all units produced during the period are necessarily affected. The 117,798 vehicles recalled by Volkswagen were identified by specific chassis numbers, meaning that two Polos manufactured in the same month may have different fates: one is part of the recall, the other is not. Therefore, individual chassis consultation is the only reliable method to determine if a specific Volkswagen vehicle needs to go to the dealership, and the automaker emphasizes that verification can be done at any time through the official portal without waiting for a letter.

What is the combined instrument cluster and why is Volkswagen’s failure dangerous

The combined instrument cluster is the component located behind the steering wheel that gathers and displays vital information for the driver in real-time. In modern Volkswagen vehicles and those from other automakers, this component is a digital screen that shows the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, engine temperature, gear indicators, and all warning lights for the brake system, ABS, airbag, and engine. When the combined instrument cluster fails, the driver loses simultaneous access to all this information, a condition equivalent to driving without knowing the speed, how much fuel remains, or if any safety system of the Volkswagen vehicle has a problem.

The issue identified by Volkswagen is software-related, not hardware. The defect causes the combined instrument to exhibit unexpected behavior during engine start-up and stop functioning shortly after, leaving the dashboard dark or with frozen information while the driver is already in motion. The good news is that, since it’s a software problem, the repair does not require the replacement of physical components: the Volkswagen dealership applies an update to the combined instrument system, a procedure that usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the unit and resolves the defect permanently.

How to check if your Volkswagen car is under recall

The verification process is simple and can be done from home in less than two minutes. The owner accesses Volkswagen’s official recall portal at vwapps.volkswagen.com.br/Recall, enters the vehicle’s chassis number, and the system immediately informs if that car is involved in any active recall campaign. The chassis number is printed on the CRLV (vehicle document) and can also be viewed on the windshield column on the driver’s side, a 17-character alphanumeric sequence that uniquely identifies each Volkswagen vehicle manufactured worldwide.

For those who prefer direct assistance, Volkswagen provides the Customer Service Center via the toll-free number 0800 019 8866. Starting May 11, any authorized Volkswagen dealership in Brazil will be ready to receive the recalled vehicles and perform the repair at no cost to the owner, regardless of whether the car is within or outside the manufacturer’s original warranty. Recall is a legal obligation of the manufacturer as provided in the Consumer Defense Code and monitored by Senacon (National Consumer Secretariat), and no charge can be made to the owner for the service.

What happens if the Volkswagen vehicle owner ignores the recall

Failing to attend the recall does not result in a direct fine, but it has practical consequences that the owner needs to consider. Volkswagen identified a risk of accident associated with the failure, and driving a vehicle with a known and unrepaired defect can lead to civil liability in case of an incident, as well as possible complications with insurers who may check if the vehicle has a pending recall before authorizing coverage. In resale, the history of an unattended recall appears in inquiries made by buyers and dealerships, a factor that can complicate negotiations or reduce the value of Volkswagen models in the used market.

The recall service has no expiration date, and the owner can contact the Volkswagen dealership at any time, even years after the call. The recommendation, however, is not to delay: the defect involves a real safety risk, the repair is free and quick, and the sooner the combined instrument software is updated, the less chance the driver will be surprised by a dashboard that stops working in the middle of a highway or in heavy urban traffic. Volkswagen emphasizes that the call is a preventive measure, meaning that the manufacturer identified the risk before any accidents were recorded and is acting to correct the problem before real consequences occur.

And you, do you have a Polo, Virtus, Nivus, T-Cross, or Tera? Have you checked if your Volkswagen car is under recall? Leave a comment and help notify other owners.
