Fatal Accident on Transpetro Ship Raises Safety Questions in the Industry

A fatal accident occurred on Wednesday (19) aboard the ship Dragão do Mar, operated by Transpetro, a subsidiary of Petrobras.

Worker Edilson Sergio da Silva fell from a height of approximately six meters while working in the area for storing drums above the main deck.

The incident occurred around 9:50 AM local time, about two nautical miles from Campbell Island, in the Strait of Malacca.

Despite receiving first aid on board, Edilson did not survive his injuries and suffered a cardiac arrest 30 minutes after the accident. The information comes from Sindipetro-RJ.

The vessel immediately initiated a maneuver to return to Singapore, the nearest port, to attempt more advanced medical care, but unfortunately, the worker passed away.

Maritime Accidents and Safety Concerns

The Petroleum Workers Union of Rio de Janeiro (Sindipetro-RJ) has raised concerns about safety conditions in offshore operations, highlighting the need for adequate staffing and effective training to prevent accidents.

Although the incident occurred on a Transpetro vessel, the discussion on safety in the maritime sector remains a priority.

In another case, on the 27th of November last year, workers Herbert Martins and Diego Nazareth lost their lives while working at the Terminal of Guanabara Bay (TEBIG).

These events reinforce the importance of constant reviews of safety protocols.

Next Friday (21), Sindipetro-RJ will hold a symbolic act in honor of Rodrigo Antônio, a worker who passed away on February 22, 2015, following an accident at the Baixada Fluminense Thermoelectric Plant.

Transpetro Announces Safety Standstill

In light of the accident, Transpetro announced that it will carry out a Safety Standstill across the fleet, terminals, and headquarters of the company. The goal will be to review protocols and reinforce preventive measures.

Additionally, Sindipetro-RJ, in conjunction with FNP and FUP, has determined the cessation of the meeting of the Working Group on Safety, Environment, and Health (GT de SMS) related to outsourced workers, which was scheduled for the same day as the accident.

The union also criticized the absence of Transpetro in this group, emphasizing that the company does not have a permanent seat in these discussions.

The Safety of Workers Must Be a Priority

Transpetro has invested in safety programs, but events like this reinforce the need to improve protocols and ensure a safer environment for workers.

The tragedy involving Edilson Sergio da Silva raises questions about the challenges in preventing accidents in maritime operations.
