In New Caledonia, Vale Produces Nickel and Cobalt at the Industrial Complex Known as Deep South Plant
The Brazilian mining giant Vale stated that negotiations with New Century Resources to sell its nickel operations on the island of New Caledonia in the Pacific have failed.

In May, Vale informed that it had started exclusive negotiations with an Australian firm for the sale of Vale Nouvelle-Calédonie (VNC).
“Vale and all parties involved in the divestment process – including the Province of South New Caledonia, the French state, and VNC management – continue to explore alternatives to create a viable future for VNC, all of which contemplate Vale’s exit,” said CEO Eduardo Bartolomeo in a statement.

“We are hopeful for a positive outcome and are working with all involved parties with this purpose in mind,” he added.
The statement mentioned that Vale will take the necessary measures to place VNC on care and maintenance in preparation for a possible suspension of operations if no other solution is found in the coming months.
In New Caledonia (photo), Vale produces nickel and cobalt. The industrial complex, known as the Deep South plant, includes a hydrometallurgical plant and a power plant operated by its subsidiary Prony Energies, Enercal.
