Volkswagen Is Preparing A New Pickup, The Tukan, To Replace The Saveiro In Brazil In 2026, With Production In Paraná, Modern Engine, And Competing With Toro And Montana In The Segment.

On Monday, the 2nd, Volkswagen announced that it will launch the Tukan, an all-new pickup to replace the traditional Saveiro in Brazil, expected to debut between 2026 and 2027 and be produced in São José dos Pinhais (PR).

The promise is to combine robustness and technology, positioning the new model in an intermediate segment, larger than the Saveiro and capable of challenging competitors like Fiat Toro and Chevrolet Montana.

The new truck will be part of the brand’s strategy to modernize its lineup in the country and embrace electrification.

A New Chapter For Volkswagen’s Brazilian Pickup

Volkswagen’s bet is to launch a pickup that surpasses the current Saveiro in size, technology, and versatility.

While the Saveiro has been a popular model for urban and commercial use for decades, the new vehicle promises a more comprehensive proposal, with versions for both work and lifestyle.

Production is planned to take place at the São José dos Pinhais factory in Paraná, where the brand already manufactures models like the T-Cross and Polo Track, solidifying Brazil as an important hub in the German brand’s vehicle strategy.

Name, Design, And Segment Of The New Pickup

The new model is called Volkswagen Tukan, in homage to the Tarok concept presented years ago.

This name has already been mentioned in specialized publications and automotive networks.

The visual inspiration is expected to follow Volkswagen’s new identity, with slim LED headlights and a modern front, something recently seen in models like the Tera SUV.

The vehicle is also expected to be offered in different cab versions (single and double), enhancing its versatility and appealing to both fleet owners and families or self-employed professionals.

Platform And Technology Under The Tukan’s Hood

The new Volkswagen pickup will be built on the modular MQB Hybrid platform, adapted to accommodate electrified systems and bring more efficiency.

This base is already used in other models from the brand and represents a significant technological leap over the architecture used by the Saveiro in recent generations.

The most likely engine to debut under the hood is the 1.5 TSI Evo2 flex, a setup promising around 150 hp of power and robust torque for varied use, combining performance with economy.

There is also the possibility of adopting a mild hybrid system of 48 volts, reinforcing the brand’s electrification strategy in Brazil.

New Volkswagen Pickup: Robustness And Versatility For Everyday Life

Even with a focus on technology, the new pickup is not expected to compromise the necessary strength for carrying loads and navigating various terrains.

The rear suspension is expected to adopt a system with a solid axle and leaf springs—a traditional solution that ensures robustness, especially in work versions that require higher load capacity and durability.

Base versions may maintain simpler engine options, such as the already known 1.6 aspirated engine, offering a more accessible alternative—while the intermediate and top variants should focus on performance and technology.

Competition In The Pickup Market

The arrival of the new Volkswagen pickup occurs in a scenario where the compact and intermediate truck segment is increasingly competitive in Brazil.

Models like the Fiat Toro and Chevrolet Montana dominate part of the market, with proposals that balance comfort and utility.

As such, the German brand sees the replacement of the Saveiro as an opportunity to reposition its presence in this segment, offering a modern, high-tech product tailored to current Brazilian consumer needs.

Expectations And Future Of The Line

The expectation is that the new pickup marks a new phase for Volkswagen in Brazil, combining tradition and innovation.

The pickup is expected to hit stores between mid-2026 and early 2027, officially marking the end of a cycle that began decades ago with the Saveiro and opening a new chapter in the brand’s national portfolio.

Thus, Volkswagen is preparing not only to replace an icon but also to enter more competitively into a segment essential for the Brazilian market.
