Skyworth Unveils Hybrid Minivan Summer, with Retro Design Inspired by the Classic Volkswagen Kombi and Space for Up to Seven Passengers
Chinese automakers are no longer just associated with blatant copies of foreign models. However, in some cases, the inspiration from classic vehicles still appears evidently. A recent example comes from the brand Skyworth, registered with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, with a minivan that closely resembles the famous Volkswagen Kombi.
The Summer Minivan and Its Retro Look
The minivan is called Summer. It is a plug-in hybrid vehicle with a retro look, developed by Skyworth, a company founded in 2017. The design recaptures characteristic elements of the original Kombi, manufactured in the 1950s and 1960s, rather than the electric ID.Buzz version launched in recent years.
The similarities with the German model begin with the rounded LED headlights. Although positioned slightly higher than on the classic Kombi, the shape maintains the retro style. The curved roof, windows, doors, and even the bumpers reinforce the memory of the old Volkswagen van.

Visual Similarities and Differences with the Kombi
Even without reproducing the famous “V” at the front, other parts maintain a similar visual identity. The wheels and taillights have shapes similar to those of the Kombi.
At the rear, there is a more striking difference: the Summer has two doors that open sideways, unlike the traditional single door. The windshield also follows a different path as it is not divided like in the classic Volkswagen model.
Dimensions and Interior Space for Seven Passengers
The dimensions of the Summer indicate good internal space. With a length of 3.25 meters and a wheelbase of 2.99 meters, the minivan promises to comfortably accommodate up to seven occupants.
Details about the interior have not yet been disclosed, but a modern look is expected, contrasting with the simple interior of the old Kombi.
Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain and Performance
In terms of mechanics, the Skyworth Summer combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. The gasoline engine delivers 154 horsepower, while the electric motor adds another 94 horsepower.
Together, the hybrid system offers a combined power of 215 horsepower. The declared top speed is 165 km/h. Information about the battery capacity and the model’s range has not yet been revealed.
Possible Legal Dispute Over Design
The launch of the Summer also raises legal questions. Volkswagen may take legal action due to the strong inspiration in the design of the Kombi.
In 2024, the German brand had already tried to block the registration of the Ora Ballet Cat, a model from GWM that resembled the Beetle. At that time, the ruling favored the Chinese automaker. Now, it remains to be seen if history will repeat itself with Skyworth.
