The German Multinational Volkswagen May Also Cease Production of Gol, Voyage, and Fox at Its Plant in Taubaté, SP
After the exit of the major automaker Ford from the country, removing the EcoSport SUV and the Ka family from the lineup, the German multinational Volkswagen announced that between May 9 and 28, more than 2500 employees at its factory in São Bernardo do Campo, in the ABC Paulista region, SP, will enter collective vacation due to the lack of components. This suspension of activities is called a shutdown, a leave with a deduction from the time bank.
In addition to semiconductors, Volkswagen Anchieta is also suffering from a shortage of tires and audio systems. As a result, the production of the models Polo, Virtus, Nivus, and Saveiro will be compromised for a week, particularly since the plant has recently operated with only one shift for three months.
The other half of Volkswagen’s factory floor staff will continue to work, along with another 8,000 employees from the unit.

Meanwhile, in Taubaté, where the Gol and Voyage models are produced, production with two work shifts – the second was resumed in early April – will also be suspended for a week.
Volkswagen still hopes that the supply of electronic components will return to normal starting in the second half of this year. It is important to note that these semiconductors are used in various electronic parts of the vehicles, such as in transmission, entertainment systems, safety, lighting, air conditioning, among others.
Volkswagen issued a statement regarding the shutdown: “Volkswagen do Brasil informs that the factory in São Bernardo do Campo/SP (Anchieta), starting on 9/5/22, twill take 20 days of collective vacation for both shifts due to the lack of semiconductors.” The manufacturer does not specify how many employees received the collective vacation, but the Metalworkers’ Union of ABC states that it involves 2,500 workers out of the 4,500 who work on the production lines. In total, the Anchieta factory has approximately 8,200 employees.
Mercedes-Benz Also Stopped
At the beginning of April, Mercedes-Benz put 5,600 employees from São Bernardo do Campo (SP) and Juiz de Fora (MG) on collective vacation. The suspension occurred between April 18 and last Tuesday (3).
According to the company, the main reason is the ongoing global crisis and the adjustment of production of bus chassis trucks and aggregates in the city.
In a note sent to g1, Mercedes-Benz reported that it grants collective vacation to part of the productive staff, about 5,000 in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) and 600 in Juiz de Fora.
