Christmas Installation of 7.5 Meters Made with 2.4 Thousand Squares Mobilized 56 Artisans for Three Months, Created Workshops, Integrated Generations, and Became a Meeting Point in Praça Pio XII Central

A crochet Christmas tree measuring 7.5 meters became an attraction in downtown Pradópolis, bringing together collective work, community participation, and cultural impact in Praça Pio XII, where the illuminated installation has been drawing attention since its final assembly.

Installed in Praça Pio XII, the illuminated Christmas tree catches the eye of residents and visitors, transforming the central space into a meeting point during the holiday season.

The project involved 56 artisans of different ages over three months in a voluntary initiative that mobilized residents interested in contributing.

Made up of approximately 2.4 thousand handmade crochet squares, the tree represents a collective effort marked by weekly meetings and continuous dedication.

The idea originated from the director of the municipality’s Culture Department, Regina Atique Ferraz, who was responsible for coordinating the project and encouraging local community involvement.

According to Regina, the inspiration came after seeing crochet trees in Italy, a reference that motivated the adaptation of the proposal to the local reality.

The balls of yarn used in the creation were obtained through partnerships and donations, making the production feasible without direct costs to the participants.

The City Hall took responsibility for the metal structure, installation, and lighting, ensuring safety and visibility for the mounted decoration.

Christmas Tree Crochet: Initiative Gathered Experienced and Beginner Crocheters

The production began in September and took place at the municipality’s Educational Center, a space that hosted regular meetings and experience sharing.

During the process, experienced artisans shared their knowledge with people who had never crocheted before, expanding the initiative’s reach.

Regina highlighted that, in addition to the initially invited crocheters, many people expressed interest in learning, leading to the creation of a workshop.

Today, the group consists of 56 women and one boy, a combination that reinforces the diversity and inclusive nature of the proposal.

For retiree Aparecida Fonzere, who has crocheted since she was 9, the collective work brought new meaning to the practice.

She reported that after retirement, she used to crochet alone, but began to appreciate the exchanges and conversations provided by the group.

Aparecida also pointed out that the participation of children helped break the notion that crochet is an activity limited to older individuals.

Residents Highlight Pride and Collective Impact

Professor Leandro Magalhães, a resident of the city, stated he had never seen a similar project in Pradópolis, emphasizing the feeling of collective pride.

According to him, his mother’s involvement in the production made the experience even more meaningful and reinforced the symbolic value of the tree.

For retiree Hélio Brito, the decoration represents a gift to the community, a result of the individual effort of each participant.

He remarked that the work required dedication, but the final result is very beautiful and well-placed in the public space.

Generations Grew Closer Through Crochet

The initiative also brought together different generations from the same family, uniting mother, daughter, and grandmother around collective learning.

Housewife Andreza Francisco shared that she started with no experience and learned from her mother while supporting her daughter’s participation.

According to Andreza, the activity helped reduce the time her child spent on the phone, strengthening family bonding during the process.

At 10 years old, Alice Francisco Simão is among the youngest participants and reported that she began by just making chains.

With constant practice, she stated she got the hang of it and developed a liking for the activity, finishing the project with a sense of personal achievement.
