The Project of Russia in Partnership with Bolivia Aims to Create a Complete Productive Chain for Lithium
Uranium One Group JSC, a company of the ROSATOM group, and YLB (Lithium Deposits of Bolivia, Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos), a Bolivian state-owned company, signed an agreement to build a lithium carbonate mining and production complex in the Potosí Department of Bolivia. This Russian-Bolivian joint project aims to create a complete productive chain for lithium, leveraging the abundant reserves of this element in the country. This article will discuss the details of this partnership and its impact on the development of a green economy.
Lithium plays a crucial role in the development of energy storage systems, which are widely used in various high-tech industries. Currently, lithium is at the center of the green economy due to its importance for the transition to clean and sustainable energy sources. The joint project between Uranium One Group and YLB will establish a complete productive chain, from lithium mining to the production of a marketable product.
The Investment of US$ 600 Million
Kirill Komarov, First Deputy General Director of Development and International Business at ROSATOM, highlighted that this agreement represents new prospects for a long-term cooperation between Russia and Bolivia. This is ROSATOM’s first large-scale foreign project in the mining and lithium production area, with an estimated investment of 600 million dollars.

Two African countries will inaugurate in 4 days an 825-meter bridge suspended 90 meters high over a reservoir — it is the largest of three bridges of a megaproject that will supply millions of people.
The industrial complex to be built will have an initial production capacity of 25 thousand tons of lithium carbonate per year, which can be expanded based on mining activities. ROSATOM has also committed to providing training for qualified personnel to boost the development of this high-tech industry in Bolivia.
Technology and Socioeconomic Impact Generated by Lithium Mining and Production
According to the signed agreement, Uranium One Group will participate in the construction of the industrial complex using the Russian direct sorption extraction technology, recognized for its economic efficiency and low environmental impact. ROSATOM already has a solid cooperation with Bolivia, as demonstrated by the project to build the Nuclear Technology Research and Development Center (CNTRD) in El Alto.
This previous partnership opened opportunities for the application of nuclear technology in the health, agriculture, and other sectors. The new Russian-Bolivian joint project will contribute to the social and economic development of the country, as well as improve the quality of life of the Bolivian population.
The partnership between Uranium One Group and YLB to build a mining and lithium carbonate production complex in Bolivia will drive the development of the production chain for this essential element for the green economy. With Russian extraction technology and the expertise of Uranium One Group, efficient and high-quality production is expected. Furthermore, this project will contribute to the socioeconomic growth of Bolivia and strengthen cooperation between Russia and Bolivia in the energy and mining sectors.
