Lecar, the Brazilian electric car manufacturer, faced a setback by losing the bid for the former Ford factory in Camaçari (BA) to BYD. However, Flávio Figueiredo Assis, known as the Brazilian Elon Musk, is not giving up and already has another location in mind for his factory. Learn more about this story and Lecar’s plans for the future of the national automotive market!
Even after losing the factory in Camaçari to BYD, Lecar has not given up on the Brazilian market. The company is searching for a new site, separate from the Ford factory, with the region of Caxias do Sul in Rio Grande do Sul being considered an option due to its significance in the country’s automotive segment.
Commitment to Brazil
In an official statement, Lecar reaffirms its commitment to the development of Brazil, highlighting the importance of strong and strategic national industries. The company plans to develop local suppliers, create jobs and income, and seek support from state and federal governments to become a prominent international Brazilian manufacturer.

Lecar is about to complete the prototype of the LECAR Model 459, a coupe with a range of 400 km expected to be priced at R$ 279,000. In addition to producing electric vehicles, the BYD manufacturer plans to include in its portfolio the production of electric batteries, taking advantage of Brazil’s self-sufficiency in essential minerals for these cells.
BYD and the Ford Factory
The bid for the former Ford factory in Camaçari was won by BYD, which paid R$ 287,816,458.00 for the land. With this, the Chinese manufacturer intends to produce models such as the BYD Dolphin, BYD Song Plus, BYD Yuan Plus, and BYD Dolphin Mini in Brazil, taking advantage of the extensive available area.
Despite the setback, Lecar decided not to appeal the decision regarding the former Ford factory, as this could delay its plans to deliver electric cars made by Brazilians for Brazilians. Flávio Figueiredo Assis, the company’s founder, explained that the lawyers warned about the slow pace of the appeals process, leading to the decision to walk away from Camaçari.
Despite the challenges, Lecar and other electric car manufacturers demonstrate that the Brazilian market is vibrant and constantly evolving. With the search for strategic locations and technological innovation, the sector promises to thrive!
