The Brazilian manufacturer joins forces with the Indian conglomerate to meet local production requirements and technological support in the MTA project.
The Embraer announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Indian group Mahindra to collaborate on the bidding process for a new military transport aircraft in India.
The agreement aims to supply the multi-mission C-390 Millennium cargo aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF), meeting the requirements of the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) project. This strategic partnership seeks to strengthen the Brazilian manufacturer’s presence in the Asian market and meet local manufacturing demands.
Partnership for local production and maintenance
The project includes the establishment of an industrial structure in India for the final assembly of the aircraft, should the proposal be selected by the local government. In addition to production, the collaboration between the companies foresees the development of a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) center for the fleet.

Brazilian Navy disables 50 dredges in the Amazon, causing millions in losses to illegal mining operating in the rivers of Amazonas.
Mahindra Defense Systems, the arm of the Indian conglomerate focused on security, will be responsible for coordinating this infrastructure together with Embraer‘s technology.
The initiative aligns with the government program “Make in India,” which encourages industrial autonomy and technology transfer to domestic companies. Embraer and Mahindra have already started discussions with the IAF to present the technical differentiators of the C-390, aiming for the next stages of the public tender. The country seeks to replace its older fleets with aircraft that have greater cargo capacity and operational versatility.
Technological differentiators of the C-390 Millennium
The C-390 Millennium is noted for its ability to perform various missions, such as troop transport, cargo drop, aeromedical evacuation, and forest fire fighting.
The aircraft can be refueled in mid-flight and can also act as a refueler for other planes and helicopters. This flexibility is one of the central points of Embraer‘s proposal for the Indian market, which demands equipment capable of operating in diverse weather conditions and short runways.
Since entering service with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019, the model has accumulated records of availability and performance in international missions. The cargo aircraft uses a fly-by-wire flight control system, which reduces the workload of pilots and increases maneuvering precision.
With the partnership with Mahindra, the Brazilian manufacturer expects to consolidate the C-390 as the main choice for the modernization of military air logistics in the region.
Impacts on the defense and logistics market
The formalization of this agreement represents a significant step for Embraer in the competition with other global manufacturers also targeting India’s billion-dollar contract.
The choice of a robust local partner like the Mahindra Group provides reach and regulatory knowledge to the Brazilian company in Indian territory. The success of the venture could open doors for new business in the executive and commercial aviation sectors, areas where the company already has a track record.
The timeline of the bidding and the amounts involved in the potential contract depend on future decisions from the Ministry of Defense of India. Industry analysts note that delivery capability and after-sales support will be decisive criteria for the final decision.
Embraer projects that industrial cooperation will not only meet the immediate demand of the Air Force but also create a technological hub for defense aviation capable of serving other countries in Asia.
