Petrobras’ New Sustainability Strategy Includes Exporting Green and Blue Hydrogen, Focused on the Energy Transition.
At a decisive moment, the Brazilian state-owned oil giant, Petrobras, is keeping an eye on the future, turning its attention to the green and blue hydrogen market. Mauricio Tolmasquim, the company’s director of energy transition and sustainability, indicated that Petrobras is assessing the commercialization potential of these types of hydrogen, both for the domestic and international markets.
“We are pondering whether we should start with green hydrogen or blue hydrogen at home or abroad. The decision will be guided by market prices and legislation”, Tolmasquim stated at an event hosted by the Brazilian Center for International Relations (Cebri).
Navigating the Green and Blue Hydrogen Waves
Petrobras is exploring production and commercialization opportunities for both green hydrogen and blue hydrogen, as Airbus UpNext has done with its aircraft. Green hydrogen is generated from renewable energy sources, while blue hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels. Both are being considered as potential products for the company to sell.

“Green hydrogen and blue hydrogen are on our radar. We are interested in green because of our commitment to renewable sources, and in blue due to our expertise in utilizing natural gas and capturing carbon dioxide. However, we are still analyzing the market”, Tolmasquim explained.
Petrobras Evaluates Global Opportunities for Green and Blue Hydrogen
With a hydrogen auction approaching in Europe and growing interest in the American market, Petrobras is strategically positioning itself to establish its presence in these areas, particularly in the green and blue hydrogen market.
“We are trying to understand how to compete in the global green and blue hydrogen market, as the competition to participate in these auctions is intense. We are determined to enter the hydrogen market, but the method is still under evaluation. In the United States, for example, there are incentives for hydrogen producers, but we are still assessing the possibilities”, the executive detailed.
This strategic shift by Petrobras towards the exploration of green and blue hydrogen reflects the company’s commitment to the transition to a low-carbon economy, opening new opportunities for Brazil in the emerging global clean energy market. It is worth noting that there is even a project planned for 2024 to build a production plant for this fuel in Minas Gerais.
