Neighboring City of the Country’s Largest Beach Expansion, Guaratuba Will Expand the Waterfront with Beach Widening in a Unique Package of Projects and Works, Including Deposit of 1.1 Million Cubic Meters of Sediments and New Erosion Control Structures.
The government of Paraná has launched the bid for contracting the revitalization, which encompasses Central, Caieiras, and Prainha beaches in a segment of 4.7 km, with complete urban improvements and maritime interventions to increase rainwater flow and enhance water quality.
Guaratuba enters the map of major coastal interventions while the largest beach expansion occurs in Itapoá, a city it borders, with a forecast of 6.4 million cubic meters of sand to be deposited along the waterfront.
For Guaratuba, the estimate is for sections of up to 100 meters in width, sediments taken from offshore deposits, and a set of works that combines sand retention, drainage, and waterfront redevelopment.

Giant underwater pipeline begins to take shape with a R$ 134.7 million project at the Port of Santos: the 1.7 km structure uses 12-meter and 700 mm pipes to supply water to 450,000 people in Guarujá.
What the Bid Foresees for the Guaratuba Waterfront
The bid released by the government of Paraná addresses the contracting of an integrated effort, with projects and works in the same package. The revitalization includes beach widening and urban restructuring along the planned stretch.
The intervention covers 4.7 km and focuses on three points in the city: Central Beach, Caieiras, and Prainha. The proposal is for the set to function as a unique transformation, rather than as separate actions.
How Much Sand Will Be Used and Where the Material Will Come From
The forecast for Guaratuba is the use of 1.1 million cubic meters of sediments, taken from offshore deposits. This way, the beaches can have sections of up to 100 meters in width.
The regional context is noteworthy because the city borders Itapoá, where the largest beach expansion in the country is taking place, with a forecast of 6.4 million cubic meters of sand deposited along the waterfront.
Maritime Structures Against Erosion and Sand Retention

The package provides for nine maritime erosion control structures along the waterfront, focused on retaining sand, increasing rainwater drainage capacity to the sea, and improving water quality.
The composition of these structures is detailed as follows:
Five current guides, with two at Central Beach and three at Prainha, two groins at Caieira, two headlands at Central Beach and Prainha. Additionally, there is a plan to implement 15,563 tetrapods.
Drainage and Complete Urban Improvements Along the Waterfront
In addition to beach widening and maritime structures, the bid provides for improvements in drainage systems and a broad range of urban works.
Among the mentioned items are the construction and renovation of sidewalks, pavements, bike lanes, walking paths, lighting, landscaping, and accessibility. The idea is to renew the waterfront as a space for daily use, not just as a stretch of sand.
How This Work Connects to the Largest Beach Expansion in the Country
Guaratuba appears as a neighboring city of Itapoá, where the largest beach expansion in the country is underway.
Although the volumes of sand are different, the basis shows a similar logic: to widen the sand strip and combine coastal intervention with waterfront improvements.
The basis also mentions that the waterfront of Matinhos underwent a similar process, reinforcing that Paraná has been accumulating recent experiences with this type of work.
And now a quick question: do you think that works like the largest beach expansion and the waterfront expansion in Guaratuba should be a priority for tourism and coastal protection, or do you see risks of impacts that need more public debate?
