Meet the M1A2 Abrams, U.S. War Tank That Is Among the Most Powerful and Feared in the World. The M1A2 Abrams Tank Features Uranium Ammunition and Innovative Technology.

The M1A2 Abrams is a war tank used by the U.S. Army. The model weighs about 54 tons and has advanced armor, firepower, and high mobility. Its primary armament includes a 120 mm Smooth Bore Cannon that can fire various types of ammunition, enhancing its effectiveness against armored targets.

In the past year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the arrival of the first units of the American war tank, which the Kiev Army used to boost its slow counteroffensive against Russian troops.

The delivery of these tanks was also announced by Joe Biden, the American president, when the Ukrainian leader visited the White House seeking support for the counteroffensive to reclaim territories occupied by Russia. The United States promised to send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, equipped with 120 mm depleted uranium ammunition.

These munitions in the M1A2 Abrams tank can penetrate armor, but they are also controversial due to the toxic risks to military personnel and the population of the country. The war tank is named after General Creighton Abrams, commander of U.S. forces during the Vietnam War.

Launched in 1990, it has undergone several upgrades since then, with the latest being the M1A2 SEPv3, released in 2015. It is equipped with a 120 mm cannon, two 7.62 mm machine guns, and a 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun.

The M1A2 SEP weighs 63 tons, has a maximum speed of 68 km/h, and can operate for 425 km. The engine delivers 1,500 horsepower with a gas turbine. The M1A2 Abrams weighs 54 tons, reaches up to 72.4 km/h, and can operate for nearly 500 kilometers.

Technologies Present in the Most Lethal War Tank in the U.S.

With a crew of four, it incorporates advanced technologies such as thermal imaging, computerized systems, fire control, and reactive armor to enhance battlefield survivability.

Approved for production in 1990, the M1A2 Abrams tank represents the technological enhancement of the U.S. Army on the basic design of the M1A1 and the world’s most modern war tank.

Externally similar in appearance to the M1A1, the most notable exterior changes are the redesigned Commander’s Weapon Station (CWS) and the addition of an Independent Thermal Viewer for the Commander on the left side of the turret in front of the loader’s hatch. Internally, however, the M1A2 Abrams tank has been radically redesigned to leverage the latest technology.

Meet the M1A2 SEP Program

Approved for implementation in 1995, the M1A2 System Enhancement Package (SEP) is a technological upgrade and standardization program by which the M1 and M1A2 fleet of the Army was brought to a common standard.

The most notable modification will be the introduction of an auxiliary power unit under standard armor and the addition of a unit for air conditioning and cooling of the crew compartment.

Other modifications to the vehicle will include updates to the Inter-Vehicle Information System (IVIS), which allows for automatic and continuous information exchange between vehicles.

Now, IVIS features a color screen, full-size keyboard, digital mapping, and graphics generation capabilities, along with voice recognition capabilities, updates to the primary sighting system of the gunner, and improvements to the intercom and radio communications of the war tank.

The production of the M1A2 Abrams was halted after the initial run of 637 vehicles. As part of the fleet upgrade program, 547 of the Army’s current stock of M1s are being upgraded to M1A2 SEP standards, which requires a complete remanufacturing of the turret.
