The ‘Green Santos’ Marks A Significant Advance For Suzano And The Brazilian Pulp Export Sector.

Suzano, a global leader in eucalyptus-derived bioproducts, celebrates the success of the first journey of the ‘Green Santos’, the largest pulp ship in the world, which arrived in China this week. The vessel, a result of the partnership between Suzano and Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers, departed from the Port of Santos on March 4, carrying 72,000 tons of exclusive pulp from the company to the Asian market and completed this week its first exclusive trip for the company to China.

In addition to improving Suzano’s logistics, the capacity of the ‘Green Santos’ represents a significant step in reducing the carbon footprint per ton transported.

Delivered to Suzano at the end of 2023, the ‘Green Santos’ is just the first of a series of similarly sized ships scheduled to be delivered this year. The initiative comes in response to the projected increase in pulp exports, driven by Suzano’s new factory being built in Ribas do Rio Pardo, Mato Grosso do Sul. The Port of Santos is the main starting point for this logistics.

Known as the Cerrado Project, the new unit, expected to start operations by June 2024, will increase Suzano’s total capacity to 13.5 million tons annually. The production will be shipped through the Port of Santos, where the first shipment of the ‘Green Santos’ took place.

Currently, pulp represents 2.8% of Brazilian pulp exports, according to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, referring to March 2024. Of this total, nearly 30% is destined for China, the main importer of pulp from Brazil.

What Is Brazilian Pulp?

Brazilian pulp has played an increasingly significant role in the country’s export landscape. According to recent data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, referring to March 2024, pulp accounts for approximately 2.8% of the total Brazilian exports.

The vessel, a result of the partnership between Suzano and Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers, departed from the Port of Santos carrying 72,000 tons of exclusive pulp from the company.

Among the destinations for these exports made by a pulp ship, China emerges as one of the main importers of Brazilian pulp. About 30% of the total exported is destined for the Asian giant.

But Why Is Brazilian Pulp So Sought After, Especially By China?

Several factors contribute to this. Firstly, Brazil has vast areas of planted forests, especially eucalyptus, which are sustainable sources of raw material for pulp production. These forests, combined with advanced cultivation and management techniques, ensure a constant and high-quality supply for the pulp industry.

Additionally, the growing concern for sustainability and the search for renewable materials has driven demand for pulp, which is widely used in the manufacturing of a variety of products, including paper, packaging, chemicals, and textiles.

Lastly, Brazil’s strategic geographic position, with easy access to major consumer markets such as Asia, also contributes to the country’s competitiveness in the international pulp trade.

Given this scenario, it is evident that Brazilian pulp plays a crucial role in the country’s foreign trade, generating jobs, revenues, and contributing to economic and sustainable development.

With global demand for sustainable products continuously growing, the future of the Brazilian pulp sector looks promising, with opportunities for expansion and consolidation of its position as one of the main players in the global market.
