A new experimental medication for obesity treatment is drawing the attention of the medical community after presenting unprecedented results in an international clinical study. The retatrutide, developed by the American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, demonstrated an average weight loss of up to 28.3% in patients monitored over 80 weeks.
The results were released in June 2026 by Eli Lilly during the 85th Scientific Session of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in the United States and published simultaneously in the scientific journal The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), one of the most respected medical journals in the world.
According to the researchers, the observed indices are close to those normally achieved by bariatric surgery procedures, currently considered one of the most effective interventions against severe obesity.
Study involved more than 2,300 participants
The results are part of the phase 3 TRIUMPH-1 clinical study, which evaluated the efficacy and safety of retatrutide in 2,367 adults with obesity or overweight associated with at least one weight-related condition.

During the 80 weeks of follow-up, participants who received the highest doses of the medication lost, on average, more than 70 pounds (about 32 kilograms), equivalent to 28.3% of their initial body weight.
Additionally, approximately half of the patients treated with the maximum dose recorded a reduction of more than 30% in body weight, a result generally associated with bariatric procedures.
How does retatrutide work?
Retatrutide is part of a new generation of medications developed for the treatment of obesity.
Unlike previous therapies, the medication acts simultaneously on three hormonal receptors related to appetite control and metabolism: GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1), GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide), and glucagon.
By acting on these three mechanisms at the same time, the drug became known as a “triple agonism” therapy, capable of reducing hunger, increasing the feeling of satiety, and stimulating the body’s energy expenditure.
Results Approach Bariatric Surgery
For decades, bariatric surgery was considered the most effective strategy for patients with severe obesity.
The results of TRIUMPH-1, however, show that drug therapies can begin to achieve levels of weight loss comparable to those obtained by surgical procedures. In some evaluated groups, the reduction ranged between 25% and 30% of body weight.
In addition to weight loss, researchers observed improvements in cardiovascular and metabolic indicators, including blood pressure, lipid profile, and abdominal circumference.
Benefits May Go Beyond Weight Loss
According to Eli Lilly and the researchers responsible for the study, the effects of retatrutide were not limited to weight reduction.
The data indicated improvement in various metabolic markers associated with type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and other diseases frequently related to obesity.
Therefore, specialists evaluate that the medication could play an important role in treating conditions associated with excess weight, although further analyses are still necessary to confirm these benefits in the long term.
Side Effects Require Attention
Despite the positive results, researchers highlighted the occurrence of adverse events similar to those observed in other drugs of the same class.
The most frequent effects included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation, especially during the initial adaptation period to the treatment.
According to the study data, most events were considered mild or moderate, although some participants discontinued the use of the medication due to gastrointestinal symptoms.
Approval Still Depends on New Stages
Despite the promising performance, retatrutide has not yet received commercial approval from health regulatory bodies.
Currently, Eli Lilly continues to conduct complementary studies to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the medication in different groups of patients.
Only after completing these steps can the pharmaceutical company request authorization for commercialization from regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
Market follows the advancement of the new therapy
The release of the TRIUMPH-1 results had a strong impact on the pharmaceutical sector and among investors who follow the obesity medication market.
Analysts point out that, if approved, retatrutide could compete with already established treatments, such as Wegovy by Novo Nordisk and Zepbound, also marketed by Eli Lilly.
Treatment could change the future of obesity
The results released in June 2026 reinforce a trend observed in recent years: the rapid advancement of medications aimed at treating obesity.
Although bariatric surgery remains an important alternative for many patients, the development of therapies capable of producing similar weight loss could significantly expand the options available for doctors and patients in the future.
