Sumitomo Chemical has gained prominence in recent years for its investment in wind energy. The Japanese giant is now considered one of the most important companies in the world when it comes to chemistry. In Brazil, the company focuses more on agriculture, animal nutrition, and environmental health. Due to its excellent work in sustainability in Brazil, it has been internationally recognized for its actions in renewable energy and environmental policies.

Wind Energy: Sumitomo Invests in Sustainability

The Japanese company won the I-REC award, an international renewable energy certificate granted by the Renewable Energy Certificate Standard. The entity conducts an analysis of companies that have a strong commitment to sustainability around the globe. The industrial complex of Sumitomo Chemical is located in Maracanaú, Ceará. In 2020, the company renewed its energy matrix project.

The company signed a contract with Enel Green Power, substituting its demand with renewable energy. As a result, the industrial complex is now supplied with an impressive 90% wind energy, with 10% from thermoelectric/hydroelectric sources. This change is significant compared to the past, where 65% was hydroelectric and 35% thermoelectric. Consequently, the environment will be less impacted by non-renewable energy sources.

Company Policy Considering the Environment

The provided wind energy has a generation capacity of 2,150 MWh. This amount is sufficient to meet the demand of Sumitomo Chemical. Pedro Tagliari, Director of Supply Chain and Operations at the company, stated that the changes in the company, using renewable energy, are part of the new sustainability policy of the company: ”One of our goals is to promote the concept of sustainability aligned with business strategies, in addition to contributing to the preservation of natural resources by offering responsible solutions in the work we do for society”.
