The Pioneering Renovation of the Drillship ODN I Mobilized Over 600 Workers at the Shipyard

Rio de Janeiro, August 10, 2023 – In an unprecedented feat in the Brazilian Maritime Industry, the Estaleiro Rio Grande (RS) has just completed the maintenance of the drillship ODN I, owned by Foresea. With more than 600 workers mobilized, the innovative operation lasted 66 days.

The ODN I, an imposing vessel measuring 240 meters in length, belongs to Foresea, a renowned company in the offshore drilling sector. Since the work began, the ship has remained on land for two months, undergoing an exhaustive process of repair and modernization.

The Challenge of Unprecedented Maintenance

Preparation and Planning

The Estaleiro Rio Grande, owned by Ecovix, prepared a special plan for the drillship, including the construction of a custom cradle. Ricardo Ávila, the operational director of Ecovix, explained the challenge: “It was something never done before, both for the client and for the shipyard. Our biggest obstacle was finding skilled labor to work on a tight schedule. But after three months of preparation, the results were very positive.”

Continuation of the Journey

Now, the ODN I is heading to Rio de Janeiro, where it will spend another month to complete the review. During this time, important equipment will be reinstalled and necessary materials will be loaded to restart operations. Gioppo emphasizes: “We are ready for a new contract, maintaining the standard of excellence and safety that defines Foresea.”

A Drillship with History

Interventions in 63 Wells

The ODN I is part of the five-owned offshore drilling rigs operated by Foresea. In the last 10 years, it has worked in several deepwater and ultra-deepwater fields, having intervened in 63 wells.

Cutting-Edge Technology

Equipped with a DP-3 dynamic positioning system and Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) technology, the ODN I can operate at depths of up to 3,048 meters. Its ability to drill producing, injector, and exploratory wells with high complexity, safety, and precision is among the most advanced, reaching depths of up to 12,195 meters.

Conclusion

The renovation of the drillship ODN I signifies a significant milestone for the Brazilian Offshore Industry. With innovation, planning, and collaboration, this project opens doors for future maintenance of large vessels in Brazil. Foresea, along with Estaleiro Rio Grande, has taken a bold step to redefine standards of excellence, placing the country at the forefront of global maritime technology.
