The Hyundai HB20 Faces Issues of Power Loss and Multimedia System Failures, According to Reports. Experts Indicate That Direct Injection Requires Quality Fuel. Hyundai Treats These Cases Seriously, But Future Owners Should Be Aware of These Challenges Before Investing in the Popular Compact Hatch.
Did you know that the Hyundai HB20, despite being one of the most popular compact hatches in Brazil, has generated numerous complaints from its owners? Power loss, increased fuel consumption, and multimedia system failures are some of the most common problems reported. Discover all the details about these defects and find out if it’s worth investing in this model.
The Hyundai HB20 arrived in the Brazilian market in 2012, quickly winning over consumers with its attractive design and good equipment offerings. Manufactured in Piracicaba (SP), the model has become one of Hyundai’s main products in Brazil.
However, not everything is rosy for the owners of this compact hatch. Reports of power loss, increased fuel consumption, and multimedia system failures have caused frustration among its owners.

Direct Injection Problems:
The 1.0 turbo flex engine, introduced in the 2019 facelift, has been subject to criticism. Reports on the site Reclame Aqui highlight problems with the direct injection system, such as power loss and increased fuel consumption.
On the Reclame Aqui website, owner Maria from São Paulo states that her HB20 TGDI 2022/2023 experienced problems in December 2023, and again in April 2024, requiring mechanical assistance repeatedly.
Maria says that “the injection warning light came on the dashboard and the car lost speed, no longer performing as expected”. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, where it remained under repairs for 15 days. In April 2024, the problem reappeared, and Maria once again needed a tow truck to take the car to the shop.
This is just one of the dozens of similar complaints. In an interview with Autoesporte, mechanic Paulo Vianna explains that direct injection sprays fuel directly into the cylinder, which requires specialized maintenance and care when refueling with quality fuel.
According to him, the reported problems may be caused by adulterated fuel or chronic defects in the model. In this regard, Paulo Vianna adds that direct injection offers more precise control of fuel intake, allowing for greater power and torque, but also requires more care and maintenance.
Multimedia System Failures
Another frequent problem is the multimedia system. Some owners report that the equipment freezes or does not connect to cell phones. Rayanne from Brasília also complained on Reclame Aqui that her multimedia system had not connected with the Bluelink system since she purchased the car. After several attempts to resolve the issue, the problem was fixed by the dealership.
Like the injection issue, this is another problem with dozens of similar cases on Reclame Aqui. According to Paulo Vianna, the malfunction of the multimedia system in some units of the Hyundai HB20 may stem from software failures.
Most of the time, the defects are corrected with a system update performed at the dealership. Vianna emphasizes that, although this issue may be bothersome, it generally does not interfere with driving the car.
In response, Hyundai stated that the reported cases are isolated and covered by the 5-year warranty. The company assures that it takes all complaints seriously and is committed to maintaining high standards of quality in customer service. In a statement, the manufacturer highlighted that its after-sales department is always available to address any issues faced by customers.
