Under Construction in Espírito Santo, Porto Central Establishes Itself as the Largest Private Deep-Water Port in Brazil, With Operations Expected in 2027.
Porto Central, located in the municipality of Presidente Kennedy (ES), is making significant progress in its construction works. The largest private deep-water port under construction in Brazil is in the initial phase of executing the southern breakwater, an essential structure to protect future logistical operations.
The preparation of the quarry that will supply the project with large rocks is nearly complete. Located 27 km from the port area, the quarry will be responsible for providing the material for the breakwater, with transport following strict environmental and logistical control.
Robust Structure and Diversified Operations at Porto Central
With a total area of 2,000 hectares, Porto Central is being developed to accommodate up to 54 berths, with a depth of up to 25 meters. This will allow for the movement of various types of cargo, such as:
-
MO26 starts producing 180,000 barrels/day in the Brazilian pre-salt and Mero becomes Petrobras’ third largest oil field with 770,000 bbl/day.
-
Russia is building the world’s most powerful nuclear icebreaker with 150 MW and 2 reactors while the US has not delivered a new heavy one since 1999.
-
Styrofoam block cut with hot wire turned into a real boat with three layers of fiberglass and polyester resin, floats without rotting or rusting, carries up to five people, and uses a professional shipyard sandwich technique for less than R$ 500 per square meter.
-
With a capacity for 9,100 vehicles, solar panels on deck, and liquefied natural gas engines, the Höegh Aurora is the world’s largest car carrier, and the ship that can embark an entire city’s worth of cars in a single voyage will transition to zero-carbon ammonia by 2027, becoming the first large cargo ship in history to completely abandon fossil fuels.
- Grains and Fertilizers
- Oil and Natural Gas
- Containers
- Support for Offshore Operations
The project will be implemented in phases, according to market demand. Phase 1, already underway, includes the construction of a liquid bulk terminal aimed at the transshipment of oil between ships.
Environmental Commitment Marks Porto Central Works
The works at Porto Central are accompanied by a series of mandatory environmental actions provided for in the licensing.
Among them, the following stand out:
- Planting of Native Species
- Wildlife Management and Relocation
- Reuse of Biomass Generated in Land Cleaning
More than 15,000 seedlings have already been planted, with a goal of reaching 100,000 by the end of Phase 1. The extracted plant material is being crushed and incorporated into the topsoil for environmental recovery of nearby areas.
The next steps of Phase 1 of Porto Central include:
- Installation of the Main Construction Site
- Earthmoving
- Dredging of the Access Channel
- Assembly of the Concrete Precast Center
All these actions aim to prepare the necessary infrastructure for the terminal to begin commercial operations in 2027.
Porto Central Represents a New Era for the National Port Sector
By combining cutting-edge infrastructure, ideal depth for large vessels, and an environmental commitment, Porto Central emerges as a project that promises to transform the Brazilian logistics sector.
In addition to fostering regional growth, the venture places Espírito Santo at the center of international maritime trade routes.
