The Russian Army Registers An Impressive Strategic Advance In Ukraine, Marking Its Largest Territorial Conquest Since The Beginning Of The Conflict.

Russian forces have intensified advances in Ukraine, marking the fastest pace since the beginning of the invasion in 2022. Just in the last month, Moscow’s troops captured an area equivalent to half the size of London, according to independent analyses and reports from specialized bloggers.

This advance comes amid a phase that analysts consider one of the most dangerous of the conflict, with significant territorial gains for Russia and the United States allowing Kiev to use advanced American-made missiles in its counteroffensives.

Records Of Conquests

The Russian independent news group Agentstvo revealed that Russia has achieved new monthly and weekly records in terms of occupied territory. Just last week, Russian troops captured 235 square miles, a milestone in 2024. In November, the accumulated advance was 600 square miles, according to data from the DeepState group, which tracks combat imagery and updates on the frontline maps.

Since July, recent advances have been remarkable, especially after Ukrainian actions in the western region of Kursk, Russia. Consequently, Moscow has intensified its attacks in eastern Ukraine. Currently, Russia controls 18% of Ukrainian territory, including all of Crimea, much of the Donbass, and large regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, according to open-source maps.

Conflict Regions Between Russia And Ukraine

The Russian advance is most concentrated in Donetsk, with troops approaching the cities of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. The strategy involves surrounding territories before launching intensive attacks with heavy artillery and carpet bombing. According to updates from the Ukrainian Army, high-intensity fighting continues in the Kurakhove region, where 45 battles were recorded just on Monday night.

If Russian forces break through Ukrainian defenses in Kurakhove, they could advance toward Zaporizhzhia, strengthening strategic positions for new attacks on Pokrovsk. Bloggers state that troops are already near Kurakhove, while the Institute for the Study of War, based in Washington, highlighted that the advances reflect strategies exploiting vulnerabilities in Ukrainian defenses.

Human And Territorial Impacts

The conflict, which has turned vast areas of eastern and southern Ukraine into devastated lands, has already left hundreds of thousands dead and injured, according to Western estimates. However, both Russia and Ukraine have avoided disclosing official casualty figures.

In territorial terms, Russian conquests challenge the efforts of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who maintains his firm stance that peace will only be achieved with the complete withdrawal of Russian troops and the return of occupied territories, including Crimea.

Ukrainian Challenges

Despite Zelenskiy’s determination, Ukraine faces growing challenges. Outnumbered and with equipment limitations, the Army struggles to recruit new soldiers and strengthen its units. Zelenskiy highlighted that President Vladimir Putin’s primary objectives are to consolidate control over all of Donbass and to expel Ukrainian troops from the Kursk region.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin remains confident. Putin replaced his defense minister in May and claimed that the Russian army is advancing effectively, promising to achieve all the objectives set in Ukraine.

Next Steps

With the current scenario, the conflict seems far from resolution. As Russia advances in southeastern Ukraine, exploiting tactical defeats, Kiev seeks international support and new resources to resist.

The future largely depends on how both nations balance their military and strategic efforts. However, for the civilian population, the marks of destruction and human losses make the cost of war increasingly devastating.
