BYD Song Plus Electric SUV Survives Three Lightning Strikes in China Without Damage to Main Systems and with Driver Protected
A BYD Song Plus EV was struck three times by lightning while passing through the service area of Tieshan, in the Guangxi port region of China. Nearby cameras recorded flashes and electrical arcs as the discharges hit the vehicle’s roof.
The driver emerged completely unharmed. The footage was released by local media, including the Sanyan Tech newspaper.
The main electrical system of the vehicle, known as “three electrics” — traction battery, electronic control, and motor — suffered no damage.

At the most remote point on the planet, thousands of kilometers away from any inhabited land, there is a cemetery of spacecraft where space structures are sent at the end of their mission.
This happened because the insulation designed for these components worked as intended, even after the series of strikes.
Technical Review After Lightning Strikes
The discharges repeatedly hit the electric SUV’s roof rack area, generating visible arcs. After a thorough investigation, technicians found no short circuits in the three main components of the powertrain.
Only two impact points were identified on the roof, with no additional damage to the body.
Moreover, the assessment confirmed that the structure maintained its integrity, reinforcing the effectiveness of the insulation system. This performance strengthens the model’s safety in extreme situations.
Why Did the Car Survive?
The interior of a car with a sealed metal body provides relative protection during a lightning strike due to the so-called “Faraday cage effect.”
In this phenomenon, the electric current travels through the metal structure to the ground, keeping the occupants at the same potential difference as the body. This prevents electrocution.
For this reason, experts recommend that after such an impact, occupants should not exit the vehicle immediately. It is best to wait for the arrival of firefighters to ensure total safety.
Precautions During Storms
In Brazil, storms with lightning are frequent. For drivers caught by these conditions, some protocols increase safety.
Among them, turning off electronic devices, including the engine and sound system, retracting antennas, and keeping windows fully closed.
Another important guideline is to remain inside the car until conditions improve. To reduce the risk of residual discharges, it is recommended to wait about 30 minutes after the last thunder before exiting the vehicle.
The case in China demonstrated that when insulation technology is properly applied, an electric vehicle can withstand even three direct lightning strikes without putting the driver’s life at risk.
