Radix Completes Petrobras’ New FPSO Project, Applying BIM Technology and Combined Cycle System for Revitalization of Mature Fields.
Petrobras, a renowned oil operator, is promoting a revolution in the energy sector with its significant advances. Known worldwide as one of the largest oil and gas companies, Petrobras is committed to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to optimize its operations. Recently, it announced plans to strengthen its infrastructure and ensure excellence in sustainable production. This measure projects a promising future for the entire industry. The application of new strategies will not only increase efficiency but will also reduce operational costs.
Focusing on modernizing its operations, Petrobras embarked on a development project for a new FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading unit). This project promises to have a significant impact on the revitalization of mature fields, extending the lifespan of these valuable assets. The new platform not only increases production capacity but also incorporates combined cycle technology, contributing to a lower environmental impact. Operations are expected to begin in 2025, marking a new chapter in the company’s trajectory.
Technology and Engineering Innovations for a Greener Future
In 2023, Petrobras reinforced its commitment to sustainability and innovation by signing contracts with leading companies in the sector, such as Radix. This partnership has brought significant improvements in design and operational efficiency. By the end of September, Radix successfully completed the basic project of the FPSO P-86, showcasing an incredible example of how BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology can transform complex projects.

The growing use of digital models is positioning Petrobras as a true pioneer in innovation in the oil and gas sector. By adopting these advanced technologies, Petrobras is not only improving its internal operations but also encouraging the industry to seek more creative and sustainable solutions. These developments reflect the company’s commitment to establishing itself as a global reference oil operator.
These advances demonstrate Petrobras’ ability to quickly adapt to the needs of the market and the environment. Through investments and strategic partnerships, the company continues to be a crucial driver for Brazil’s economy. With a focus on the future, Petrobras is already planning its next phase of innovation and expansion.
Petrobras: Leader in the Oil Sector
Petrobras stands out as the leading oil operator by planning a new stage of revitalization of mature fields, confirming its important position in the oil and gas sector. This move is part of the company’s strategy to optimize the yields of its facilities, with the latest update occurring in September, when it completed the basic project of the P-86, currently in the selection process for the next stage.
Two crucial projects were developed in conjunction with Petrobras’ engineering team, becoming part of a significant contract worth R$ 57 million, signed in 2023 with the oil operator. This contract covers the development of multidisciplinary basic engineering projects, highlighting the use of digital automation tools. Petrobras’ new assets are the focus of this technological advancement aimed at improving efficiency and innovation in the sector.
Advanced Technology at Petrobras
The application of BIM technology (Building Information Modeling) is critical at this phase, with each discipline designed in 3D, facilitating visualization and adjustments in the project. This investment in technology and engineering in the early stages of the project drastically reduces costs associated with later modifications, thus increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of Petrobras’ projects.
This focus on technology not only decreases CO2 emissions but also enables Petrobras to achieve more economical oil production levels, maintaining one of the lowest carbon intensities globally, according to Augusto Castro, General Manager of Capital Projects at Radix. This approach emphasizes the commitment of the oil and gas company to lead sustainable initiatives.
Innovations and Sustainability at Petrobras
The P-86 will represent a milestone, being the first floating platform of the company to implement a combined cycle energy generation system. This innovation aims to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with Petrobras’ Strategic Plan 2050, which guides its future actions toward more sustainable development.
In the contract with a long-term strategic partner, Petrobras will also deliver the owner engineering and detailed design for the development of the E-House for the FPSOs P-80 and P-83. This project reflects the company’s commitment to innovative and efficient solutions in the oil and gas sector.
Comprehensive Approach in Petrobras’ Projects
Radix, Petrobras’ partner, operates in all phases of FPSO projects, from feasibility studies to conceptual design, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and operation, extending to the decommissioning of assets. It has a robust team of around 1,700 employees globally, with over 500 dedicated to engineering, reflecting the scale and reach of the oil and gas company’s projects.
Petrobras demonstrates excellence in its performance in greenfield and brownfield projects, covering the entire lifecycle of oil and gas assets, establishing itself as a sector leader by aligning sustainability, technology, and innovation in all its ventures.
