Raízen Inaugurates Billion-Dollar Second-Generation Ethanol Plant, Promising Benefits for the Company and the Community, Check It Out
The multinational Raízen inaugurated, last Friday (24), its Second-Generation Ethanol (E2G) plant, at the Bonfim Bioenergy Park, located in Guariba (SP). This project, which represents an investment of R$ 1.2 billion, is the largest cellulosic ethanol factory in the world with an annual production capacity of 82 million liters, 80% of which have already been contracted.
Understand Raízen’s Goal with the Inauguration of the World’s Largest Second-Generation Ethanol Plant
Raízen, recognized as the largest global producer of second-generation ethanol (E2G), sees this biofuel as an essential solution for its commitment to producing renewable and clean energy.
With its second-generation ethanol plant, the company aims to meet the growing global demand for a low-carbon economy and expand into hard-to-decarbonize sectors, such as aviation and maritime transport.

According to Ricardo Mussa, CEO of Raízen, with a carbon footprint 80% lower than that of regular Brazilian gasoline and 30% lower than First-Generation Ethanol (E1G), the initiative represents a significant technological innovation in the bioenergy sector, exemplifying a profitable circular economy by reducing waste and environmental impacts, as production was increased by 50% without requiring an additional hectare of sugarcane and does not compete with food production.
In addition to the Bonfim second-generation ethanol plant, Raízen already operates another E2G unit at the Costa Pinto Bioenergy Park, in Piracicaba (SP). Together, the facilities strengthen the company’s position as the largest global producer of second-generation ethanol, with a combined capacity of 124 million liters per year.
Raízen Will Invest in New Ethanol Plants in Brazil Soon
The multinational announced plans to build nine more cellulosic ethanol plants, all with volumes already sold under long-term contracts. The company’s plan includes a total of 20 E2G units, developed to produce 1.6 billion liters per year.
The establishment of the second-generation ethanol plant brings significant benefits to local communities, increasing participation in the state municipalities fund, promoting shared economic growth, and developing national suppliers. The construction of the 20 units is expected to impact over 500 suppliers and create over 17,000 direct and indirect jobs.
To train the employees of the new plants, Raízen developed the first E2G Learning Program in partnership with institutions such as Senai, ETECs, and BioContal. According to Mussa, emphasizing that these investments reinforce the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, Raízen has 35% of its debt linked to renewable projects, including the construction of the new plants, through the anticipation of future revenues and green loans, such as the issuance of the first green bond. Its commitment is to increase renewable energy production by 80% by 2030.
