Recent research conducted by Bahian institutions and released in 2026 reveals rare compounds in a natural product from the semi-arid region, while sustainable production strengthens income and tourism in the region

Research conducted by Bahian institutions revealed uncommon properties in a specific type of honey produced in the hinterlands of Bahia. The study analyzed the product’s composition and identified rare compounds that have been sparking interest in the health field.

The information was released by the A TARDE portal, based on data from researchers at the Federal Institute of Bahia (IF Baiano), the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), and the Science on the Table project.

The survey analyzed 74 honey samples from 35 different varieties, allowing the identification of relevant patterns in the product’s composition.

Structured production since 2017 boosts income and tourism in the interior of Bahia

The advancement of this activity in the hinterlands did not happen suddenly. In 2017, local producers began to professionalize production after participating in technical events focused on the activity.

From that period on, productive organization intensified. Currently, structured projects in the interior of Bahia already operate with hundreds of colonies managed rationally, which has allowed for increased production and improved product quality.

Additionally, since 2020, initiatives like the Meliponiculture School, located on Itaparica Island, have been offering technical training and environmental education, further strengthening the sector.

As a result, the activity evolved and became part of rural tourism. Today, productive spaces welcome visitors, students, and researchers, offering educational experiences and tastings.

Recent study identifies rare compounds with functional potential

The data analyzed in 2026 revealed that this type of honey has different characteristics from the more common products available on the market.

During the natural fermentation process, relevant bioactive compounds were identified. Among them, trehalulose stands out, a rare sugar that is absorbed more slowly by the body.

According to Professor Luís Fernandes Pereira Santos, from UFBA, this characteristic may contribute to a lower glycemic impact, which justifies the interest in studies related to the prevention of metabolic diseases, such as diabetes.

Additionally, the research identified other substances with functional potential:

  • Trigonelline
  • Phenylalanine
  • Tyrosine
  • Phenolic compounds
  • Aromatic compounds

These results broaden scientific interest in the product and indicate future possibilities for application in the functional food sector.

Discovery reinforces economic potential and appreciation of the semi-arid region

With the release of the results in 2026, the product began to gain greater visibility. The study reinforces the potential for economic appreciation of this type of production in the semi-arid region.

Currently, Bahia has about 60 cataloged native varieties, in addition to approximately 10 still in the process of identification. This scenario expands the possibilities for productive diversification.

Consequently, the activity consolidates as a strategy for sustainable development. It generates income, encourages environmental preservation, and strengthens local production chains.

Furthermore, the growing demand for natural and functional foods in the global market favors products with proven scientific differentials.

Natural product gains market space and attracts new research

Based on the latest data, researchers are already expanding studies to deepen the analysis of the properties of this type of honey.

At the same time, local producers are strengthening commercialization and seeking new markets. In this way, the product ceases to be just regional and becomes part of a segment with higher added value.

Therefore, the discovery announced in 2026 not only reinforces the scientific importance of the product but also opens new economic opportunities for the Bahian hinterland.

Would you trust a natural food with scientific proof to take care of your health on a daily basis?
