PUC-Rio Celebrates 60 Years of Graduate Studies in Electrical Engineering with Special Event
In a remarkable celebration, the Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE) at PUC-Rio honored its 60 years of significant contributions to graduate studies in Electrical Engineering. The event, held on December 6 at the Padre Anchieta Auditorium, symbolized not only the academic recognition of the research led by the department since 1963 but also its ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence.
A Legacy of Innovation and Partnership
The DEE’s graduate program at PUC-Rio, with an impressive CAPES rating of 6 in the Engineering IV area, is at the academic forefront, being one of the 14 best programs in Brazil and one of the two most prominent in Rio de Janeiro. This program, rich in history and achievements, collaborates closely with funding agencies and leading companies, with projects that range from the oil and gas sector to important initiatives focused on energy transition, digital transformation, and telecommunications.
The meeting featured speeches from representatives of CAPES, PSR, TIM Brasil, Holistic AI, and Thymos Energia, highlighting the deep partnership between academia and industry. Prof. Délberis Lima, director of the DEE, emphasized the history and impact of the program, highlighting not only its longevity but also the influence of the department’s faculty in the creation and evolution of other programs at PUC-Rio.

Track Record of Success and Academic Impact
Since the establishment of the Academic Master’s degree in 1963, followed by the Doctorate in 1981, the DEE’s graduate program has trained nearly 1,400 masters and over 400 doctors. The research within the program covers areas such as Applied Electromagnetism, Decision Support Methods, Signal Processing, Automation and Robotics, Communication Systems, and Electric Power Systems.
The DEE is not limited to collaborations with traditional funding agencies, such as CAPES, CNPq, and FAPERJ, but also accumulates a series of projects sponsored by renowned companies such as Petrobras, Repsol, Telebrasil, Ericsson, BNDES, Energisa, FGV, EDP, among others. This interaction with important international universities and the quality of scientific production, highlighted by publications in high-impact journals, underscore the global recognition of the department.
Recognition and Future Perspectives
The department’s achievements were enthusiastically celebrated by the event participants, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between university and industry. Speakers such as Luiz Barroso from PSR and alumnus Adriano Koshiyama, co-CEO of Holistic AI, Inc., recognized the crucial importance of the DEE at PUC-Rio in advancing innovation and academic and industrial research in the energy sector.
Prof. Hypolito José Kalinowski, coordinator of the Engineering IV area at CAPES, praised the competence and leadership of the program in the Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering sector, reiterating PUC-Rio’s excellence in training future leaders and driving energy transformation in the country.
