Change in the validity of the new National Identity Card alters rules for children, adults, and the elderly, expands integration of public data, and establishes a national deadline for replacing the old RG by 2032, while millions of Brazilians already use the unified document with CPF as official identification.
The National Identity Card (CIN) now has a defined validity period according to the citizen’s age at the time of issuance, replacing the logic of the old state RG with a national model linked to the CPF.
Under current rules, the document is valid for 5 years for children, 10 years for people aged 12 to under 60, and has indefinite validity for those over 60 years old.
The old RG did not lose its validity immediately.

Why is no other state like Rio Grande do Sul? An exclusive biome in Brazil, two countries as direct neighbors, ten years as an independent republic, and a culture closer to Buenos Aires than to Brasília explain the difference.
According to the federal government, documents issued in the previous model can be used until February 28, 2032, the deadline for the population to make the change gradually, without the need for a rush to service centers.
The first copy of the CIN on paper is free nationwide, as are renewals within the stipulated deadlines.
The second copy may have a state charge, and the polycarbonate card version, when offered, may also be paid according to the rule of each federation unit.
Validity of the new identity changes according to age
The validity of the new identity card follows three age groups.
For children from 0 to under 12 years old, the document must be renewed every 5 years, as appearance and identification data can change more quickly at this stage.
For citizens aged 12 to under 60, the validity period is 10 years.
Above 60 years old, the CIN has indefinite validity, which reduces the need for new issuances for the elderly, except in cases of loss, damage, data change, or need for updating.
The change aims to keep civil information more reliable and up-to-date, especially in documents used for access to public services, social benefits, travel in countries with agreements, and identification before official bodies.
CPF becomes the unique national identification number
The main difference of the CIN compared to the old RG is the use of the CPF as the unique national identification number.
Previously, the same person could have different RG numbers issued by different states, increasing the risk of duplication and complicating the integration of registries.
With the new standard, identification becomes unified throughout the national territory.
The objective is to reduce fraud, improve data verification, and facilitate citizen access to digital public services, social programs, and services in different areas of the government.
The CIN also has a QR Code for authenticity verification and a digital version available in the Gov.br app after the physical document is issued.
The model also includes an MRZ code, an international standard used in passports, which allows use in travel to countries with which Brazil has agreements, such as those in Mercosur.
How to issue the new National Identity Card
To request the CIN, the citizen must access the scheduling service indicated by the federal government or seek the agency responsible for civil identification in their state.
In general, the service takes place at identification institutes, state citizenship units, Poupatempo, Detran, or equivalent structures.
On the scheduled day, it is necessary to present a birth certificate or marriage certificate, as applicable.
Since the CIN is linked to the CPF, the registration data must be correct and compatible with the Federal Revenue records to avoid discrepancies during issuance.
After collecting the physical card, the digital version can be accessed through the Gov.br app.
In some states, the digital document can also gather other numbers, such as PIS/Pasep, NIS, voter registration, CNH, professional card, and military certificate, provided the proofs are presented during the service.
Issuance of the CIN advances in all states
The issuance of the CIN already occurs in all states and the Federal District, but the availability of slots, scheduling channels, and delivery times vary according to local structure.
Therefore, the guidance is to verify the procedure directly on the official service of the federative unit where the document will be requested.
According to data released by the federal government in 2026, more than 49 million Brazilians had already received the new identity card.
The number updates previous surveys, which still mentioned much lower issuance levels at the beginning of the document’s implementation.
Despite the expansion, the exchange does not need to be immediate for those who have an old RG in good condition and within the acceptance period.
The replacement should occur by 2032, or before that if the citizen needs to update data, issue a second copy, or prefers to migrate to the new national standard.
