Audi’s Embarrassment In Brazil
In a statement, Audi explained that the main factor now is the return of IPI credits. According to the automaker, the government owes R$ 289 million to the three premium German brands that opened assembly lines in the country. The amount refers to benefits offered by the government in exchange for national car production from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes.
“A large part of this decision is based on the definition of what will happen with the IPI credits accumulated during the years of Inovar-Auto that have not been fully returned.”
Audi also states that it has conducted “all necessary studies to bring a new model to our production line,” indicating that the final decision will rest with the headquarters, taking into account local factors, including the IPI impasse.
Previously, Audi stopped manufacturing cars in the country between 2006 and 2015. The factory in São José dos Pinhais is currently expected to be used by Volkswagen.
Currently, the factory is responsible for assembling the Fox and the T-Cross. The unit is expected to receive the line of the unprecedented Tarok, a unibody pickup made on the Polo platform to compete with the Fiat Toro.
