Former Petrobras Economist Condemns STF Decision and Highlights the Importance of the State-Owned Company for Brazil
Cláudio Oliveira commented on the importance of the state-owned company to our country and its key moments in 67 years of history, completed on the last day of the 3rd. Petrobras is a major generator of direct jobs. It, along with its subsidiaries and affiliates, forms the Petrobras System, with a workforce of 86,108 employees. (PETROBRAS – Management Report – 2013).
The number of indirect jobs linked to the oil industry is difficult to estimate accurately, but it certainly must be in the millions. Only the fuel resale activity, carried out by small and medium Brazilian entrepreneurs in more than 40,000 service stations, keeps more than 400,000 workers active.

Cláudio Criticizes the STF Decision on the Sale of Refineries
The former Petrobras economist claims he was expecting this and had previously even predicted such an occurrence regarding the STF. “What we could perceive during the trial of the Supreme Court was deplorable; some of the ministers judge by hearsay and do not even know the subject, and this is very serious,” concludes Cláudio Oliveira.
Cláudio Oliveira Cites the Importance of General Júlio Caetano Horta Barbosa for Petrobras
It was General Júlio Caetano Horta Barbosa, the first president of the National Petroleum Council, an agency created by Decree-Law No. 395, of April 29, 1938. It was under the direction of General Horta Barbosa that the National Petroleum Council discovered the first oil fields in Brazil, in the region of the Municipality of Lobato, Bahia, in 1939.
Cláudio discusses that the general deserved more recognition, but in the end, did not become as popular as people who did not play as significant a role.
Economist Discusses What the Challenges for Petrobras Will Be in the Coming Years
When asked about the main challenges for the market leader in the coming years, Cláudio got straight to the point and said: “Currently, I see Petrobras as an organism in which a cancer is installed in the metastasis phase evolving to destroy the body, but few Brazilians perceive this.”
The former Petrobras economist believes that the current situation is almost irreversible, but still hopes that everything can return to “normal” in the near future. The fate of Petrobras – created by and for the people, being stolen for the market.
The people and the Brazilian economy need a Petrobras that meets the demand for derivatives in all its corners and with the lowest possible prices. Conversely, in the hands of the market, priority will be given to the most profitable regions and always at the highest possible prices.
