GE Renewable Energy, A Wind Turbine Manufacturer, Revealed Its Latest Wind Turbine Prototype, An Optimized Version Of Its Halifax-X Offshore Wind Turbine Design That Can Deliver 13 MW Of Output.
It is the largest wind turbine that GE has ever produced, standing at 248 meters tall, with blades 107 meters long, offering nearly double the generating capacity of most wind turbines currently deployed worldwide; the Halifax-X is an innovation.

Every time a river flows into the sea, an amount of energy equivalent to a 120-meter waterfall is silently wasted, but Japan has just inaugurated the world’s first power plant that captures this waste and transforms it into electricity 24 hours a day without sun, wind, or fuel.

Fortescue announces a radical shift by replacing diesel with a system featuring 1.2 GW of solar energy, 600 MW of wind energy, and up to 5 GWh in batteries, a giant project that could save $100 million per year and transform heavy mining into one of the largest 100% renewable operations in the world by 2028.
“With three years in the making, the Haliade-X platform has proven to be a success story. Combined with nearly 5 GW of customer commitments and an international testing and R&D program, the enhanced 13 MW version is a true testament to how we continue to innovate and develop our Haliade-X technology to meet our customers’ needs,” said GE’s CTO for offshore wind, Vincent Schellings.
GE Produced Something Larger And Better Than Its Previous Creation
The larger blade size and taller tower allow the gigantic turbine to harness more wind energy and provide a 4 percent higher conversion efficiency than GE’s previous 12 MW version of the Haliade-X prototype, which has been operating in Rotterdam since November 2019.
The deployment of larger turbines in offshore projects can also achieve high utilization factors, with some projects seeing capacity factors exceeding 60 percent.
To put the output into perspective, GE claims that using the 13 MW model, one rotation of the blades can “generate enough electricity to power a home for more than two days.”
Testing The Largest Wind Turbine In The World
During testing, the 12MW Haliade-X prototype set a record for a single day of electricity generation at 228 MWh, which would be enough energy delivered in a single day to power about 45 Australian homes for an entire year.
GE’s 13 MW turbine model is expected to see its first deployment at the Dogger Bank Wind Farm in the UK, with 190 units ordered and installation scheduled to begin in 2023. GE has confirmed 4.8 GW in orders for the Haliade-X turbine model from projects in the UK and the United States.
