Petrobras Invests R$ 29 Billion in Contracting 52 Vessels by 2026 to Expand Fleet, Reduce Chartering and Stimulate the Brazilian Naval Industry
Petrobras announced the contracting of 52 new vessels by 2026, with a planned investment of R$ 29 billion. The president of the state-owned company, Magda Chambriard, stated that this initiative will provide more flexibility and efficiency to the company’s logistics operations at Brazilian ports.
According to Magda, the vessels will allow reduce the dependence on chartering and increase control over supply operations.
“They will be vessels that will allow us to reduce our exposure to chartering and will enable us to gain flexibility and efficiency for the logistics operations of moving various supplies“, she emphasized.

The statement was made this Thursday (May 29, 2025), during an event in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, that marked the resumption of the local port’s administration by the federal government.
The current number of vessels exceeds the previous projection made by the president herself in February this year, when she mentioned the contracting of 48 ships.
Magda also highlighted that Petrobras will require between 45% and 65% local content in the construction of the vessels. This measure aims to stimulate the recovery of the naval industry in Brazil, which had not received new orders from the state-owned company since 2016.
“We changed this scenario with strong support from the federal government. Our program for the renewal and expansion of the vessel fleet is a milestone for this recovery,” she stated.
During the event, Petrobras’ president emphasized the company’s importance in national development. She stated that the state-owned company closely monitors the needs of each state and port, given the strong link between Brazil’s development and port activities.
Magda also informed that Petrobras is conducting explorations in the Pelotas Basin. Oil discoveries in the region could strengthen the economy of southern Brazil.
