Two surgeries with polylaminin were performed in Campo Grande after judicial authorization, rekindling hope of recovery in patients with spinal injury
On this Monday (23), Maria José Gonçalves, 64, and Daniel Aparecido Costa dos Santos, 32, underwent surgeries in Campo Grande with polylaminin injection, compassionate use authorized by the Justice as a last resort to regain movement after spinal injuries.
Surgeries in Campo Grande
The procedures took place at Hospital Proncor, in Campo Grande. Outside the surgical center, family members await the results of the polylaminin.
The hospital provided the space for surgeries and recovery at no cost. The medication was provided free of charge by Laboratório Cristália, associated with studies conducted for over two decades by researcher Tatiana Sampaio from UFRJ.

Authorization and medical team
Polylaminin is still in the study phase, but compassionate use was authorized by the Justice. The favorable decision came last Saturday (21), which required organization to facilitate the procedures.
The doctors came from Rio de Janeiro and are part of the same team that treated Luiz Otávio Santos Nunez, the first patient in Mato Grosso do Sul to obtain authorization for compassionate use. The families did not pay for the service.
Families’ wait
Between the judicial action protocol and the surgery, Maria and Daniel waited about two months. Hope grew with each new patient in Brazil authorized before the end of the studies submitted for approval by Anvisa.
Today, that number totals dozens of people. At the hospital, Rosimeire and Ana Paula Gonçalves, Maria’s daughters, hugged before the surgery.
Rosimeire said that the expectation is high and that the family lives in hope in light of the opportunity.
Daniel’s wife, Andria Almeida, 25, expressed her anticipation. She stated that she hopes for the return of movement but emphasized that any gain would represent a great victory for her husband and the family.
Patients’ history
Maria José became paraplegic after a domestic accident. Daniel had the same condition after a work accident.
She lives in Campo Grande, and he lives in Sidrolândia. Both accidents occurred in December of last year.
According to studies cited by the families, the best window for using polylaminin is up to 72 hours after the injury.
Still, there is support for probable results when patients have not yet entered the chronic phase.
