Secretary Of Oil, Gas, Energy And Naval Industry Of Rio De Janeiro Requests Priority For The Completion Works Of Angra 3
Hugo Leal, Secretary Of Oil, Gas, Energy And Naval Industry Of Rio De Janeiro, asked the Minister Of Mines And Energy, Alexandre Silveira, priority for the completion works of the Angra 3 nuclear plant. According to him, “the resumption of the works of Angra 3 will generate 7,000 to 9,000 jobs and R$ 21 billion in investments”.
Secretary Also Supports The Construction Of Angra 4
The state secretary, who advocates for nuclear energy production, also advocated that Angra dos Reis host another nuclear plant, Angra 4, and that the operational life of Angra 1 be extended. Additionally, he argued in favor of the expansion of the uranium enrichment unit of INB (Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil), located in Resende, in the Engenheiro Passos district.
It is important to remember that, in addition to nuclear plants and INB, the state of Rio also hosts the Nuclear Engineering Institute (IEN), Nuclep – manufacturers of heavy equipment for Nuclebrás –, the Navy shipyard – where Brazil’s first nuclear submarine is being built –, the regulatory agency, and the National Nuclear Safety Authority (ANSN). Thus, Hugo Leal sees the state of Rio as the “national capital of nuclear energy.”

About The Resumption Of The Works Of The Angra 3 Nuclear Plant
Resumed in November of last year, the construction of Angra 3 involves stages that include civil works, electromechanical assembly, commissioning of equipment and systems, and operational testing. As was done with Angra 2, it will use German-origin technology developed by Siemens/KWU, currently under the ownership of the French company Framatome.
In 1984, the construction of the plant began and faced several interruptions, which were consequences of economic restrictions. When it reached 65% progress in 2015, it was last halted due to allegations of resource diversion.
The Critical Path Acceleration Plan for Angra 3 was created for the resumption of the works. In the current phase, in addition to the completion of civil works, it is planned to close the steel sphere located inside the reactor building and install important equipment such as the spent fuel pool, the polar bridge, and the semi gantry crane.
