The rumors of the change to Voltswagen emerged on Monday (29) after an accidental publication by Volkswagen regarding the name change.
The announcement was quickly taken down, but CNBC was faster to find it. Initially, there was suspicion that it was just a joke for April Fools’ Day (April 1), as it is not common for traditional automakers to change names to symbolize the production of electric cars.

Words from the Electric Car Manufacturer Volkswagen
Voltswagen states that it plans for an “electric future” for “millions, not just for millionaires,” reinforcing its idea of manufacturing popular electric cars. The CEO Scott Keogh explains, “This name change signifies a nod to our past as the people’s car and our firm belief that our future is to be the electric car of the people.”
In a statement, Voltswagen explains: “The company will preserve elements of Volkswagen’s heritage, maintaining its iconic VW Dark Blue for gas-powered vehicles and Light Blue to differentiate the new brand centered on electric cars. From today, a new brand will be implemented across all of the company’s advertising channels, website, and social media. Moving forward, “Voltswagen” will be placed as an external emblem on all EV models, with gas vehicles bearing only the VW emblem. External and internal signage will soon be implemented across all Voltswagen properties and dealerships in the U.S.”
Expectations of the Automaker until 2025
The VW Group presented its targets for reducing carbon emissions, including the mission to sell 1 million electric cars globally by 2025. The company also plans to launch more than 70 electric models by 2029.
In Brazil, Volkswagen intends to announce five electric cars in the coming years, with the first fully electric vehicle, a long-range SUV, the ID.4, scheduled for launch in the second quarter in the national market.
