The State-Owned Companies Amazul and Nuclep Work Together on the Construction of a Prototype Nuclear Reactor, Which Will Equip a Nuclear Submarine of the Navy’s Prosub Program in Iperó, at the Aramar Experimental Center.

As previously mentioned, Amazul and Nuclep have recently sealed a contract worth over R$50 million for the construction of the nuclear reactor, which aims at the assembly, manufacturing, and supply of the cylinder and internal structures, in the containment where the reactor will be assembled, not to mention in the shielding tank.

The equipment in question is part of the propulsion system of the fifth and final submarine in a series from the Brazilian Navy’s Prosub program, which are being built at the ICN shipyard in Itaguaí.

PROSUB Delegation Visits NUCLEP Facilities

On June 23, a PROSUB delegation visited the NUCLEP facilities to closely monitor the manufacturing work of the nuclear reactor prototype currently under development at the CTM – Marine Technology Center, located in São Paulo for AMAZUL.

The project titled Labgne (Nuclear Power Generation Laboratory) was created as a ground-based prototype and at a full scale of the propulsion systems that will be installed on the submarine.

The Nuclep Labgne allows for a completely safe simulation, making it possible to install the submarine with nuclear propulsion, operate the reactor, and integrate various electronic systems into it.

According to Amazul, Upcoming Testing Phases Will Be Controlled at Labgene

According to Amazul, the subsequent testing phases of the nuclear reactor, the turbo generators, the electric motor, and related systems will be tested in a controlled manner at Labgene – which is the ground prototype at full scale of the propulsion systems that will be installed in the future on the Brazilian nuclear submarine, expected to be completed by mid-2034.
