Electric vehicle charging

A 500 km journey on a single charge – that's what the new electric car battery does and could revolutionize transport logistics.

The new electric car battery that will revolutionize transport logistics recharges from zero to full in 10 minutes. All with minimal security concerns. The solid state battery being introduced by Toyota promises to be a game changer not just for electric vehicles but for an entire industry.

Technology in logistics and transport

The technology is a potential cure for the downsides of electric cars that run on conventional lithium-ion batteries, including the relatively short distance traveled on a single charge, as well as long charging times.

A Toyota plans to be the first company to revolutionize battery logistics and sell electric cars equipped with a solid-state battery in early 2021. The world's biggest automaker will unveil a prototype next year.

Electric cars under development by Toyota will have a range more than twice the distance of a vehicle powered by a conventional lithium-ion battery under the same conditions. All done without sacrificing interior space, even in the most compact vehicle with logistics and comfort in mind.

The battery that promises to revolutionize electric car logistics

Solid-state batteries are expected to become a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries that use aqueous electrolyte solutions. Innovation in car logistics would lower the risk of fires and multiply energy density, which measures the energy a battery can provide compared to its weight.

It would only take about 10 minutes to charge an electric vehicle equipped with a solid-state battery, cutting charging time by two-thirds. The battery can extend the driving distance of a compact electric vehicle while maintaining legroom.
